The DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS was established with the inception of the college in the year 2002. The dedicated service of the faculty and support of the management, the department has grown from 2 faculty to 10 faculties. The faculty includes a professor, an associate professor with a Doctorate degree and eight assistant professors with master’s degree. The teaching experience of the faculty is ranging from 8 years to 28 years. The faculty members are actively involved in teaching and research. The faculty have published more than fifteen papers in refereed International journals and more than forty papers in reputed national and International conferences. Department has a VTU recognized research centre with two VTU recognized guides and three research scholars. The research areas of the department include Lattice theory, Nearing theory, Concept lattices, Algebraic graph theory, fuzzy, soft and rough algebraic structures. Two faculty of the department are actively involved in Engineering Education Research.
Department provides a strong foundation of Mathematical basics which are building blocks of all subjects of Engineering fields. Department handles every essential subjects of M.C.A, M.Tech. Further, some special subjects for Computer Science like Discrete Mathematical Structures and Graph Theory are taught by the department. Faculty provides a strong foundation of aptitude courses which is required for placement activities of students. The department has got faculty members who are certified by different institutions in the Engineering education field. The Department has MOUs with institutions around and assisting students in their PG projects and internships. SIGMATHS association of the department, conducts training programs/activities for students in different areas of Mathematics.

Women's Day is a day to honour and appreciate the strength, courage, and resilience of women who have faced and overcome countless challenges in their lives. It is also a day to acknowledge the work that still needs to be done to achieve gender equality and to empower women to reach their full potential. Women's Day was celebrated at St Joseph Engineering College on 8th March 2023 at 3.30 PM in Prerana Hall, Academic Block III by organizing a talk on the topic "Equity is a choice: Are we ready to embrace it?". The event was organized by the Jagruti Committee under the Discipline and equity group of SJEC in association with Department of mathematics for the faculty and students of SJEC.
Ms Joan Rita O'Brien, Head of the Department, Department of Sociology, St. Aloysius, College, Mangaluru graced the occasion with her invaluable insights being the chief guest and guest speaker of the programme. The program began with invocation and dignitaries including the chief guest Ms Joan Rita O'Brien, Dr Ramananda H S, Dean Student Welfare, Ms Salma Shabnam, Assistant Professor, Dept of Mathematics and Mr. Prasad S M, Assistant professor, department of Electronics and Communications Engineering and Chairperson of Discipline and Equity group lighting the lamp. Dr Rajesh K, Associate Professor, Department of physics welcomed the gathering and introduced the guest speaker to the gathering.
Dr Ramanada H S Dean Student welfare presented a memento to the speaker as a token of love and gratitude. The session ended with Ms. Salma Shabnam Convenor of the program giving the vote of thanks. Ms Savitha K, Assistant professor from the department of business Administration compered the program. The event was coordinated by the committee members of Discipline and Equity group. Around 150 students and many faculty members from various streams of engineering attended the talk.
The Inaugural Programme for the Lateral Entry students for the academic year 2022-23 was organized by the Department of Mathematics on 17th February 2023 at 2:00 PM in Prerana Hall, Academic Block - 3. Programme inaugurated with lighting the lamp by dignitaries.
Ms Sona from Electronics and Communication department and Mr Parikshith from Electrical and Electronics department shared their experiences and insights on how to succeed in engineering studies and make the most of their time at the college. The chief guest of the program Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal SJEC welcomed the students to SJEC and he emphasized the importance of discipline and hard work in achieving academic success. Dr Purushotttama Chippar, Vice Principal, SJEC felicitated the meritorious students. In the presidential remarks, Rev. Fr Alwyn D'Souza, Assistant Director, SJEC appealed to the students to develop confidence and wished students for their studies. The formal programme concluded with vote of thanks by Ms Shivani S, convener of the programme.
Ms Lauline M D'Souza was Master of Ceremony of programme. A total of 101 lateral entry students attended the programme.
In the second session, Dean Academic, Dr Sudheer, spoke about the curriculum, academic policies, and resources available to the students to help them achieve their academic goals. Dean Student Welfare, Dr Ramananda H S, gave a talk on the various activities and services provided by the college to support the students' personal and academic growth. HOD's of various departments presented the facilities and laboratories available in their department. The college librarian gave a brief presentation on the library's services, including online resources, study materials, and research facilities, to help the students in their academic pursuits. The placement officer of the college, Mr. Satyendra Bhat, gave a talk on the college's placement cell and the various career opportunities available to the students after graduation.
Overall, the
inauguration ceremony was a great success, providing an opportunity for the new
students to familiarize themselves with the college's culture and expectations,
and to lea about the resources available to support their academic and
personal growth and to understand the challenges in the engineering stream. I
am grateful to the Management for giving me an opportunity to organize this
programme.

On the whole, the programme was successful and has
benefited the lateral entry students to understand the challenges in the
engineering stream. I am grateful to the Management for giving me an
opportunity to organize this programme.
The
inaugural of MATLAB Laboratory and release of books prepared by the Mathematics
Department was organized on 16th December 2021 at 11.00 am in MATLAB
Laboratory, second floor, Academic Block III. The Director Rev. Fr. Wilfred
Prakash D'Souza and the Principal Dr. Rio Dsouza were the guests on the
occasion. The Dean - Student Welfare Dr. Ramananda H.S., the Head of Department
Dr. Jagadeesha B. Faculty of the
department and the students were present.
Three
books namely, The MATLAB manual, The Basic Concepts of Mathematics, Aptitude
training prepared by the Department were released during the program.
The
Dean - Student Welfare Dr. Ramananda H.S gave an insight on the importance of
adopting software's to study and understand various mathematical topics. He
also explained about the MATLAB sessions and the MATLAB manual book prepared by
the Department. He thanked management for providing MATLAB and other facilities
to conduct the lab. The Principal
released the book on "MATLAB Manual".
The
Director released the book entitled "The
Basics Concepts of Mathematics", which is prepared for the students to
understand basic concepts of Mathematics, which are required to study Engineering.
The
Department had also prepared a book on "Aptitude
Training" to benefit the students for their placement. The Director
officially released the Aptitude Training book to the students.
The
Principal and the Director addressed the students. Ms. Johncy Lolita Rodrigues
compered the program.
The
Department of Mathematics under the SIGMATHS Association conducted a 'Best out of waste' competition for the
students of first and second year BE students on Saturday 26th October 2019 from 3pm to 5pm in the First Floor,
Academic Block III. Many teams registered and participated in the
competition. A variety of creative articles were made by the students with
waste water bottles, ragged jeans, paper cups, paper tissues etc. The lot of physics
theory was used to dispense water using waste water bottles. A bag was being
prepared with ragged jeans. Decorative items were prepared by the teams. On the
whole students participated enthusiastically. The Department of Mathematics
thanks the management for giving us an opportunity to conduct an activity under
the association.
The Parent-Teacher Meet for
I semester B.E. students was held on
Saturday, 12th October 2019 at 9:30 a.m in the Kalam Auditorium,
Academic Block II, to discuss the performance
of students with their parents.

Approximately there were 375 parents/guardians & around 50 faculty

Around 9.15 a.m the
refreshments for the parents were served. And the meeting commenced with invocation at 10.00 a.m. Ms Smitha D’Souza, Assistant professor, Department of Chemistry compeered the programme and welcomed the dignitaries, parents and students for the
Parent-Teacher Meet 2019.
Dr K Jyothi, HOD-Chemistry and Coordinator of Parent - Teacher Meet 2019 presented a detailed report on the academic
performance of students in the first inteals of Ist semester and
their attendance status from 19/08/2019 to 21/09/2019. During the presentation,
she stressed on the poor performance of the students in the first Inteals and
requested them to put more efforts in the next inteal tests.
Dr
Rio D’Souza, the principal, spoke about the responsibilities of the parents
towards their ward and requested parents eaestly to keep a track of the
performance of their wards. The Director
Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza addressed the gathering, he asked the parents
to keep a track of their ward, and to see that they study for at least 3 hours
at home every day.
The
formal function was ended by delivering the vote of thanks by Ms Smitha
D’Souza, at 11.00a.m, the students joined their parents, and there was the interaction between parents and teachers,
which was held section wise in the Kalam auditorium. The parents had useful
interaction with the faculty regarding their wards which went on till 1.00 p.m.
During this time, the progress report of the first inteal test was given to
the parents. The interaction went on with the Parents by offering their
thoughts on the meeting through the feedback forms.
The
Department of Mathematics under the SIGMATHS Association conducted a hands-on 'Session on ORIGAMI' for the students
of BE on Saturday 13 April 2019 from
2pm to 4pm in the Sophia Chamber, First Floor, Academic Block III. Dr Adelaide Saldanha, Professor and
Head of the Department of Mathematics, St Agnes College, Mangaluru was the
Resource Person. She was assisted by her son Mr Prasad D'Sa who also took up a
session on origami. Origami is an art of paper folding using the basic concepts
of mathematics. The goal is to transform a flat square sheet of paper into a
finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. These designs
begin with a square sheet of paper whose sides may be of different colors,
prints or pattes. The principles of origami are also used in stents,
packaging and other engineering applications. Students actively took part in
the session and prepared various models using mathematical techniques.
Sigmaths
Association also conducted 'Best out of
waste' competition during Tiara 2019
in March 2019. Students took part actively in the competition with good
working models using waste recyclable materials. Dr Binu KG fom Mechanical
department and Dr Yagneshwaran from Civil department helped in judging the
event.
The
event 'Best out of waste’ was
organised by the Department of Mathematics
at 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm , in the Pavement between Academic Block II & III. This Competition
was based on the theme of converting the waste into something useful. 9 teams participated
in this event. Number of participants for each team was 3. Dr Yajnheswaran , Associate
Professor, Department of Civil Engineering and Dr Binu K. G, Associate
Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering were the judges for the event. The students came out with many creative
articles and presented the items and their usefulness. The Event was a great success under the guidance
of event coordinator Dr Ramananda HS, Ms
Aleyamma George, Ms Salma Shabnam along with the support of and the Department
of Mathematics and Student Event Coordinator Ms Melisha Benny.

To enhance
the knowledge on Tax policies and GST and its features and impact on economy,
an informative talk was arranged by the SIGMATHS Association, Department of
Mathematics by Dr Therese Pereira, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce
and Management of Dr. P. Dayananda Pai Sathish Pai Govement First Grade
College, Mangaluru on March 16, 2018.
The programme
was held in Fr Fred Memorial Hall from 3.00pm to 5.00 pm. Along with the staff
members of the department, approx. 140 students attended the programme.
Before the
commencement of the talk, the students who scored the highest marks in the
Aptitude test conducted by the association during the odd semester 2017 were
honoured with a cash prize. Also the students who were the active members of
the association during the time of Tiara were recognized with certificates of
recognition.
Dr. Pereira

The National Level Tech Fest TIARA-2018 was held on the 21st and 22nd February 2018 at St Joseph Engineering College, Mangaluru. TIARA-2018 was inaugurated at the Kalam Auditorium of SJEC. Mr Ivan Feandes, Managing Director and Promoter of Regent Technologies, Dubai and Mangalore Inteet City Pvt Ltd. was the Chief Guest of the programme. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, principal, SJEC welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guest.
Ivan Feandes in his address complimented the students for developing the innovative inaugural
contraptions and mentioned that India, being a country of youngsters, its future depended on the
achievements of present day youngsters. He called mode day India as a land of opportunities and spoke about how young entrepreneurs are elevating their life style with innovation and creativity. He spoke of how India could assume the role of a leader in technology. He highlighted few areas such as environmental solutions, sustainable energy, banking and finance, healthcare, artificial intelligence, and life sciences that holds potential for growth and mass impact. Congratulating the students in showing interest to participate in the various technical events, he hoped that the fest would help them develop innovations for tomorrow. He asked the students to have big goals, plan well, and work without fear and with passion.
Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, director, SJEC, presided over the ceremony and in his presidential address highlighted the need to use technology wisely and to use technology to bring about harmony and peace. Highlighting the colossal damage to life style by technology, he requested the students to keep an eye over the ill effects of technology.
Fr Rohith D’Costa, assistant director, SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza, vice-principal, SJEC, along with the conveners of the fest, Franco Menezes and Reshma K J, were present on the dais. The two-day fest witnessed the participation of students from across the region in a series of technical events displaying their technical skills and competencies.

This event focused on bringing out the research and presenting skills of the engineering students and enabling them to lea new concepts, which are beyond the syllabus. Some of the topics presented in this event were solar rains, smart quills, lifi, nanotube fountain pen, wireless power transmission etc.

Department of Civil Engineering
The Department of Civil Engineering conducted 4 events.
CENTRE LINE MARKING
The technical event was open for civil engineering students each team with three participants. They were asked to mark the centre line on the ground for the given plan. Judgement was based on the accuracy, time taken and for the neatness.

INNOVATIVE MIND
This was a paper presentation on the topic environmental aspects in engineering or smart city.
On May 6, 2017 the SIGMATHS association of the
Department of Mathematics conducted a motivational talk for all the II Sem BE
students on "Campus to Corporate Jouey
for next three years" by Dr Rio
D'souza, Vice Principal and Ms Sangeetha
Ferrao, Placement officer.
Ms Sangeetha Ferrao explained the following to the students:
Success comes when preparation meets opportunity. Decision making either higher
studies, take up a career, entrepreneur. Types of companies, IT or non IT,
Students were requested to do more certification and explore their knowledge,
Typical day at campus drive, what to do ,soft skills, positive attitude,
confidence, presence of mind, communication skills, behavior. Dr. Rio D'souza showed TED talks, first
video was about confidence, determination, smartness and positive attitude then
impossible things are possible.
On January 07, 2017 the Department of
Mathematics at SJEC conducted a FDP on Linear
Algebra and its Applications and Statistics
and Queuing Theory, in Bethania Hall for the benefit of Faculty of
Mathematics and other Departments of the College. The first session was by Dr
M.R. Arulalan, Professor in the Department of ECE at NITK - Suratkal on Linear Algebra and its Applications. The Second session was by Dr Sumathi,
Associate Professor in the Mathematics Department at MIT - Manipal on Statistics and Queuing theory. 23 Faculty
members from various Departments participated in the FDP.
The FDP started at 9:30 am with an introduction
about the programme and a formal introduction of the first speaker Dr M.R. Arulalan
by Ms Salma Shabnam, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics. Dr M.R. Arulalan in his talk explained the
following aspects to the audience.

LTI-Linear Time
Invariant systems and converting them into matrices and using properties of
matrices to solve them.
·
Relation between
Laplace, Fourier and Z-transforms and their uses in signal and systems.
At the end of his talk, Dr Arulalan
answered all the questions put forth by the participants.
After the tea break, Dr Sumathi in her
talk discussed the following topics.

Definition and basics
of Statistics and Garch Model which is widely used by
researchers to analyze the data
·
Queuing theory, its
different forms and their applications in research.
Dr Ramananda H.S, Head of the
Mathematics Department at SJEC felicitated the speakers. Both sessions were
well appreciated by all the participants.
The FDP was attended by 9 Faculty
members from Mathematics, 5 from ECE, 3 from EEE, 2 from MBA, 01 from MCA, 01
from ME.
To Create the interest in Mathematics and its
applications, an interesting fascinating
Talk on 'Maths is Fun' was
arranged by the SIGMATHS Association, Department of Mathematics by Dr MR Arulalan, Assistant Professor,
Department Of Electronics & Communication, NITK ,Mangaluru on 1ST October 2016 at 2:00pm.
The talk was very inspiring and the students were happily taking tips from the
speaker so that they can use them in their regular fields.
Sigmaths Association
organized a talk on 'How to prepare for
GATE Exams' by Mr Ananth Mallya on
17th October 2015. The main objective of this talk was to help
the students to pave their way towards gate preparation and to break the ice
towards the exam. Ananth Mallya is an alumni of SJEC who cleared Gate, hence
being a motivation for our students.
The newly recognized (VTU) Research Center in the
Department of Mathematics at SJEC was inaugurated on 31st July, 2014 at 3:30 PM
by Rev. Fr Ajith Menezes, Director – In Charge, SJEC. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal
– SJEC, Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director – SJEC, along with Rev. Fr
Joseph Cardoza, Campus Minister & Counselor – SJEC were the other
dignitories present. Dr Ramananda H.S., HOD of Mathematics and his team of
Faculty members organized the function.
The Research Center offers Ph.D Programme in
accordance with the regulations and guidelines in force. The permission is for
one year starting from the academic year 2014 - 2015.
In addition to the Department of Mathematics, SJEC
currently possess VTU approved Research Centers in the Engineering Departments
of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science & Engineering;
offering Ph.D and M.Sc (Engg.) by research programs. The Basic Science
Departments of Physics and Chemistry also possess VTU recognized research
center offering Doctoral Program (Ph.D). In addition to the above, the
Department of Business Administration also offers Doctoral Program (Ph.D)
through its VTU recognized research center.
The
Valedictory of Two-Day National Conference on “Current Trends in Scientific
Research for Engineering Applications” was held at St Joseph Engineering
College - Mangalore on the 18th of July, 2014 at 3:45 pm. The Chief
Guest of the session was Dr Rio D’Souza; Vice Principal of the College.
Assistant Director - SJEC, Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa presided over the function. Guests
of Honour, Rev. Fr Ajith Menezes; Director In Charge of SJEC, Dr Joseph
Gonsalvis; Principal of SJEC, and Prof. I. N. N Namboothiri, Department of Chemistry,
IIT - Bombay were also present.
The
National Conference facilitated researchers from eminent institutions to share
their innovative ideas and research on a common platform.
A
Two-Day National Conference on “Current Trends in Scientific Research in
Engineering Applications” organised by the Basic Science Departments was
inaugurated at 9:30 am on 17th July 2014 in St. Joseph Engineering
College. Dr. Syed Akheel Ahmed, Dean,
Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Mysore, was the chief guest.
In his key note address, he emphasized the buing need for innovation in India
and the strategies to be followed in this context, so that, India truly becomes
a super power. Rev. Fr Ajith Menezes,
Director In Charge of SJEC presided over the function. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis,
Principal-SJEC, Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director - SJEC, and Dr Rio
D’Souza, Vice Principal - SJEC were the guests of honour. Going by the number
of participants who attended the inaugural function, this conference will
definitely prove to be a milestone in scientific research in the region.
