Regular exercise is a critical part of staying healthy. People who are active live longer and feel better. Physical Activity helps you to maintain good health; physically fit and mentally healthy. Physical activity becomes an outlet for releasing tension and anxiety, and facilitates emotional stability. In order to develop integrated personality among students, the College provides facilities for co-curricular and extra-curricular activities such as sports and games.

Physical Education Department at SJEC is well established with all sports and games amenities. A green sports ground encompasses a 200 m athletic track, football, hockey, and cricket fields. A separate facility for handball, throw ball, and volleyball is also set up. A beautiful basketball court is situated on the quadrangle which is one of the centers of attraction in our College. Four shuttle badminton courts are maintained for both men and women.

A well-equipped multi-gymnasium facility is available for both men and women in their respective hostels. SJEC also has indoor facilities such as, table tennis, carom, chess etc.

17 Mr Aren Joy Fernandes IV year ECE represented India in Asian Junior Powerlifting Championship held in Dubai, UAE from 27 November to 8 December 2022. He secured Gold Medal in below 74 Kg category Powerlifting Championship by Lifting Squat 240 Kg with Bronze Medal in Squat, Bench Press 145 Kg Deadlift 309 Kg with Gold Medal and Created a New World Record in his name in deadlift. Overall he secured the Gold medal with a Total lifting weight of 694 Kg. He has also been honoured with the title BEST LIFTER Junior Men 2022

1 The Wellness & Sports Group along with Department of Physical Education, SJEC conducted a 'webinar titled "Improve Immunity through Exercise" on 14 June 2021 from 3.00 pm to 4.30 pm. The speaker of the session was Dr C Venkatesh, DoS in Physical Education & Sports Sciences, University of Mysore. Nearly 170 participants attended the webinar. The session was appreciated by all the attendees. He began his presentation with a definition of fitness, the benefits of fitness, and why we should exercise. Finally, he concluded by saying, "sports is the greatest physical poetry, involve and enjoy the poetry”. The webinar ended with a Q&A session and a vote of thanks, the webinar was appreciated by all.
2 The Department of Physical Education along with Wellness & Sports Group SJEC conducted a webinar on “Yoga for Wellness”, on 23 July 2021 from 3.00 pm to 4.30 pm. The speaker of the session was our own student Ms Venilla Manikanta IV year Civil Engineering. Nearly 103 participants attended the webinar out of which 28 candidates were out of state. Ms Venilla Manikanta carried out the Practical session along with explained the importance of yoga in our daily life very well. The session was appreciated by all the attendees.
3 The Department of Physical Education along with Wellness & Sports Group SJEC conducted a “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav Fit India Freedom Run 2.0” in the college campus to all the Staff and Students on 14 September 2021 from 4 .00 pm to 4.45 pm. The inaugural Ceremony was conducted in the college Basketball court. Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal addressed the gathering about importance of fitness. Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues PED conducted the warm up session. Rev Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director SJEC Inaugurated the race by raising the starting flag. Total 83 participants (Staff & Students) participated in the freedom run. All participants covered a distance of 2.5 km inside the campus. Then Warm down session was conducted in the college basketball court. Some spot games were conducted. The Run was appreciated by all the attendees.
4 Mr Aren Joy Fernandes III year E&C represented India, and secured 6th Place in World Junior Classic Powerlifting Championship held at Halmstad, Sweden from 21 to 30 September 2021. He lifted Squat 215 kg, Bench Press 137.5 kg, Dead lift 280 kg total weight of 632.5 kg.
5 Mr Mohammed Ismail Jaseem, III Year Mechanical Engineering Secured Third Place in below 63kg Category Mr. Dakshina Kannada Taekwondo Championship 2021 Season-2 held at St Aloysius College, Mangalore on 28 October 2021.
6 SJEC Men and Women team participated in VTU Mangaluru Zone Shuttle Badminton Tournament held at NMAMIT, Nitte on 15 &16 November 2021. SJEC Women Shuttle team created History by bagging the RUNNER UP in VTU Mangaluru Zone Women Shuttle Badminton Tournament and also participated in the VTU Inter Zonal Tournament held at VVCE, Mysuru on 19 & 20 November 2021.

He has represented Karnataka and secured First Place in National Junior Classic Powerlifting Championship held at Alappuzha, Kerala from 9 to 13 April 2022. He lifted Squat 230 kg (National Record), Bench Press 140 kg, Dead Lift 283 kg (National Record) Total Weight of 653 kg (National Record).
28 The Department of Physical Education along with Sports Advisory Committee SJEC conducted an "Endurance Race April 2022" in the college campus for III & IV year BE and PG Students on 19th April 2022 from 3.30 pm to 5.10 pm. Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues, PED –SJEC & Ms Lauline M D’Souza, Sports Advisor-SJEC were the coordinators. The inaugural Ceremony was conducted in the college Basketball court. 1 The Department of Physical Education SJEC organized a webinar on “Basic Concepts of Chess” on 28 July 2020 from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm through Cisco WebEx platform. The seminar started at 11.30 am sharp by moderator. The speaker of the session was our own student from II year Civil Ms Ivana Maria Furtado, an International Gold Medallist in Chess. Nearly 166 participants attended the webinar online. The session was appreciated by all the attendees. Ms Ivana Furtado carried out the session very well. She thought all the basic concepts involved in the game of chess, common and official names of each coin and their movement. Then she taught about the opening moves which are advantages for us to get a good opening in the game. Ms Ivana clarified all the doubts of the attendees. 2 The Department of Physical Education SJEC organized a webinar on “Yoga for Life” on 11 August 2020 from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm through Cisco WebEx platform. The speaker of the session was our own student from III year Civil Ms Venilla Manikanta – Diploma in Hatha Yoga. Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues Asst Physical Education Director was the coordinator of the webinar. Nearly 132 participants attended the webinar. The session was appreciated by all the attendees. Ms Venilla Manikanta carried out the session very well. In the first half she explained the importance of yoga in our daily life. She spoke about light limbs of yoga. She continued to explain about YAMA (ethics of yoga). Then in the second half she carried out the practical yoga session which was appreciated by all. Mr. Shreyas of IV yr Mech secured First Place in above 90 kg category Best Physique Championship. Mr. Fernandes Royce Ruben of IV yr Mech secured Fourth Place by lifting total weight of 405kg. (Dead Lift- 175kg, Squat -130kg, Bench Press - 100kg)

Secured 3rd place in “Bharath Udaya” National level on 10th February 2018 at Bengaluru and selected for Mr Asia & Mr World Best Physique Championship to be held at Philippines from 1st to 3rd June 2018.

SJEC College won the first round against the host College NMAMIT, Nitte by 1- 0 (Mr Sudershan scored the goal). SJEC lost the semifinals against KVGCE, Sullia and Secured the Third Position in the tournament.

SJEC College women throw ball and Kho-Kho team participated in the Dasara tournament on 28 th August 2016 at Mangala Stadium. Women Throw ball team enter the semifinals and the women Kho-Kho team were the Runners up in the Tournament.

SJEC College Men & Women chess team participated in VTU Rest of Bangalore zone Chess championship conducted by SJMIT, Chithradurga, on 13 th & 14 th September 2016. SJEC College women team secured the Runners up position and are selected to represent inter zonal.

ADRENALINE

SJEC College team participated in Adrenaline 2015 - Sports and Cultural competition organized by Father Muller Medical College, Kankanady from 16 th to 20th April 2015. College chess team were Runners up, Volley ball Women were Runners up, Women Dodge ball team won the Runners up and Men Tug of war team won the Winners Position and Women Tug of war team won the Runner up Position and also many prizes in Cultural and were awarded the Overall Championship Trophy.

SJEC College team Participated in the VTU Mangaluru zone Kabaddi Tournament on 24 th and 25 th April 2015 at KVGCE, Sullia and Bagged the 4th Position in the Tournament.

BASKETBALL MEN

VTU Mangaluru Zone Men’s Basketball Tournament - 2015 was organized by the Department of Physical Education of SJEC on 11 th May 2015 in the Basketball Court of the College.

The tournament was symbolically inaugurated by Dr Abdul Sharief, Principal of PA College of Engineering, who was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Function. The other dignitaries present during the occasion were Rev. Fr Ajith Menezes - Director In-charge, Rev Fr Rohith D’Costa - Assistant Director, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis - Principal, who presided over the ceremony, Dr Rio D’Souza - Vice Principal, Ms Preethi Baliga, 3 rd rank holder in M.Tech, Power Electronics awarded by VTU, Belagavi, Dr Vincent Crasta, Dean of Student Welfare and Alumni Affairs, Mr Athokpam Bikramjit Singh, and Mr Nithin Kumar Heraje, Conveners of the Sports Advisory Committee.

The function began by the invocation of the Divine by the College Choir. The gathering was welcomed by Mr Sathyendra Bhat J, Assistant Professor - MCA.

The Chief Guest, Dr Abdul Sharief addressed the gathering, wherein, he voiced his opinion on the importance of sports along with academics. He stressed on the fact that the youth of today must take active part in sports in general which helps them to demonstrate sportsmanship in all disciplines of life. He concluded by saying that winning and losing are two sides of the same coin and that athletes must take the result positively.

The team of officials chosen from VTU adjudicated the matches and the team comprised of esteemed referees including: Dr C Venkatesh, Mr Divyananda, Mr Rajendra and Mr Thippeswamy. All in all, 7 teams took part in the Basketball Tournament and tried their hands at winning the Championship.

Independence Day Celebration at SJEC - 2023

Independence Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru on 15 August, 2023 in front of College Admin Block.

Sgt Victor Rosario Correa IAF graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director of SJEC, Rev. Fr Kenneth Rayner Crasta, Assistant Director of SJEC, Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal of SJEC, Dr Purushotham Chippar Vice Principal of SJEC and Dr Ramananda H S, Dean Student Welfare were the Guests of Honour.  The dignitaries were escorted NCC Cadets to the stage for the beats of College Band.  The dignitaries were escorted to the flag post by Leading Cadet Shamitha Rego and Cadet Hrithik. The Chief Guest Sgt Victor Rosario Correa IAF hoisted the flag The National Anthem was sung by Great pride for the beats of SJEC College band by all.

Cadet Under Officer Riya D'Almeida of SJEC Air Wing requested the Chief Guest to carry out the inspection of the SJEC NCC Troops. Then the Dignitaries received the Guard of Honor by the SJEC Navy and Air Wing Cadets. 

While remembering the contributions of all freedom fighters, the Chief Guest inspired the audience to be active citizens and to work towards creating a better future for all. He spoke about his personal experience and the lessons he leat during his tenure while serving the army. He urged the young students to join the army so to serve the nation. 

The whole atmosphere was filled with a sense of patriotism by a beautiful patriotic song sung by the team Crescendo.

Ms Sweedal Pinto MC of the programme Thanked everyone. 

The programme imbibed the spirit of patriotism among the people. Sweets were distributed to all at the end of the programme.

 

Elocution Competition - 2023

The Department of Physical Education along with Sports Advisory Committee organized Elocution Competition-2023 as a part of Independence Day Celebration 2023 to all BE & PG students on 09 August 2023 from 2.30 pm to 5.00 pm on the topic "India's Remarkable Achievements Since Independence: A Jouey of Progress and Development”. Mr Pooesh M, Sports Advisor-SJEC and Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues, PED -SJEC were the coordinators. A total of 10 students registered for the competition.

The rules for the competition were as follows.

  • Elocution competition will only be in English, Kannada or Hindi. 
  • Speeches shall not be more than four minutes in length. 
  • At the end of 3rd min a short bell will be rung to remind you about the time remaining and at the end of 4th min, long bell will be rung where in you are requested to end your words.
  • Participant will be judged on the content, body language, clarity of words and time management.
  • The judge's decision is final.

The speeches delivered by the students were enlightening about the nation's advancements in fields such as space exploration, technology, healthcare, and economy. These speeches highlighted India's transformation from the challenges it faced at independence to its current status as a global powerhouse. 

Ms Supreetha D R compered the programme. Ms Jayalakshmi K P Assistant Professor-ECE and Mr Roopesh Assistant Professor- MBA were the Judges.

Yoga Hour-2023

The Department of Physical Education along with Wellness & Sports Group conducted Yoga Hour -2023 a Meditation session as a part of Inteational Yoga Day-2023 on 21 June 2023 in the College campus to all the staff & students from 4.00 pm to 5.00 pm, Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues PED & Mr Pooesh M Sports advisor were the Coordinators. Ms Himani Kishan Raj Compere the program. Dr Ramananda HS Dean SW was the yoga tutor for the session. The session was appreciated by all.
The session headed by Dean SW began with a video presentation on the importance of yoga on the mind and body. It was followed with a few stretching exercises, one set of Surya Namaskara, Anulom Vilom, Brahmari Pranayama, and Sheetali Pranayama. He also performed various other yoga exercises to the gathered crowd. The event served as a powerful platform to raise awareness about the numerous benefits of yoga, inspiring individuals to embrace healthier and more balanced lifestyles. 

 

Republic Day Celebration 2023

Republic Day is a day that is imperative to each Indian citizen because it denotes the day when India became democratic and truly independent.

The 74th Republic Day of our Nation was celebrated with pomp and show, zeal and spirit in SJEC at 8:30 am in the Basketball Court. Dr Dayakshini Head, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering - SJEC graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Rev. Fr. Alwyn Richard D'Souza Director In charge - SJEC, Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal - SJEC were the other dignitaries present for the occasion. The highlight of the day was the presence of SJEC NCC Naval and Air Wing Cadets along with SJEC College Band . 

 The dignitaries were escorted to the flag post by Leading Cadet Deekshith & Leading Cadet Aston Cardoza. As per tradition, the Chief Guest unfurled the National Flag. Parade Commander, Petty Officer Cadet Nandeesh of SJEC Naval Wing led the gathering in saluting the National Flag and rendering the National Anthem. Parade Commander, Petty Officer Cadet Nandeesh of SJEC Naval Wing requested the Chief Guest to carry out the inspection of the SJEC NCC Troops. The Chief Guest and the dignitaries were escorted by the Cadets for the Troop inspection.  Then with due permission from the Chief Guest, the three troops with pride and enthusiasm gave the Guard of Honour led by the parade commanders of SJEC Naval and Air Wing for the beats of SJEC College Band. The presence of patriotism was raised by beautiful patriotic songs from the College Choir. 


The Chief Guest in her address said that this year our country is celebrating its' 74th Republic Day, with a theme Jan Bhagidari (participation of the common people). Shramjeevis, workers with their families, who helped build the Central Vista, administrative center of our nation, Kartavya Path upkeep staff, and other locals including rickshaw pullers, owners of modest food stores, and vegetable vendors will be seated in the first row of the main dais during the parade. These exceptional invitees will participate in the Republic Day 2023 Parade, which will honor the real essence of a Republic nation. For the first time since Independence, the Border Security Force (BSF) women's unit will be included in the parade. The women's contingent of the BSF will be presented in the Republic Day Parade in 2023 for the first time since Independence, riding camels. A great day for women. Women empowerment is crucial for nation building. She urged the students not to forget about our duties towards our country. Engineering education is the backbone of any developing nation. She made a special mention of two young achievers. first example is our own student Prashanth Parashurama Koti of third year ECE. He was one among the 3 cadets from Kaataka to get selected for RDC 2023 in ship modelling category. He is representing Kaataka and Goa Directorate in Delhi. He has worked very hard from past one and half years in NCC without compromising his academic performance. We are very proud of his achievements. Second example is our young Mangalore girl Lieutenant commander (Lt Cdr) of Indian Navy, Disha Amrith, will lead the naval contingent in the Republic Day parade. Proud Moment for all of us. She stressed on five key points to remember on Republic Day:

1.Reflect on the progress of the nation.

2. Pledge to do your part.

3. The importance of access to quality education.

4. Foster a culture of innovation and creativity.

5. Celebrate the contributions of Engineers.

The address was followed by the vote of thanks and distribution of sweets. The function was compered by Ms Apeksha, III Year Computer Scienece Engineering.

The Sports team of St Joseph Engineering College - Vamanjoor, Mangaluru put on excellent performance in the recently held Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) level event and won laurels for the College under the guidance of PED, Ms.Vaneesha V Rodrigues and Mr Sudheer M, Assistant PED. SJEC Men's Basketball team secured the Runners up place in the VTU Mangaluru division Basketball Touament held at NMAMIT Nitte on 28 November 2022. The Management - SJEC congratulates the Students and the Physical Education Directors for this overwhelming achievement at university level event. 

 

St Joseph Engineering College celebrates Independence Day

On the auspicious occasion of 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotshav,  St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru celebrated India's 75 Glorious years of Independence with great joy and pomp on 15 August, 2022 at the College Basketball Court.

Air Commodore Sunil Krishna Pai (Retd) graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and Lt Commander Bharath Kumar, Commanding Officer, 5 KAR, NCC Unit, Mangalore along with Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director of SJEC, Rev. Fr Alwyn Richard D'Souza, Assistant Director of SJEC, Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal of SJEC were the Guests of Honour.  Dr Ramananda H S, Dean Student Welfare and Ms Lauline D'Souza, Convener of the programme escorted the dignitaries from the Quadrangle to the Basketball Court along with the College Band. The dignitaries were escorted to the flag post by Leading Cadet Alva Shwetha and Cadet Manoj V S.

Leading Cadet Deekshith D of SJEC Naval Wing requested the Chief Guest to carry out the inspection of the SJEC NCC Troops.

While remembering the contributions of all freedom fighters, the Chief Guest called upon everyone to contribute and work towards the overall development of India as a global leader. He stressed upon two main aspects which need to be taken care by the youth. First, cleanliness, which is the need of the hour and second, protecting the environment and nurturing the mother nature. He called upon each and everyone to plant a sapling and contribute their bit to the nature.

The whole atmosphere was filled with a sense of patriotism by a beautiful patriotic song sung by the College Choir.

Dr Ramananda HS, Dean - Student Welfare expressed the words of gratitude and Ms Shwetha S Kunte of second year ECE compered the programme. The Chief Guest along with the dignitaries planted a sapling in the college campus to mark the desire to preserve and protect the environment.

The programme imbibed the spirit of patriotism among the people. Sweets were distributed to all at the end of the programme.

 

SJEC Student bags First Place in National Junior Classic Powerlifting Championship

Mr Aren Joy Feandes, a third-year student of Electronics and Communication Engineering of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, brought laurels to the college by winning First Place in National Junior Classic Powerlifting Championship held at Alappuzha, Kerala from 9 to 13 April 2022. He created national records by lifting Squat 230 kg, and Dead Lift 283 kg amassing a total weight of 653 kg. Alongside writing 3 national records, he also lifted a 140 kg Bench Press during the event.

Mr Aren, son of Mr Jude David Feandes and Mrs Anandi Diana Feandes, entered sports at a very young age and has 6 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Silver Medals to his credit in various State, National and Inteational level championships.

In 2019, Mr Aren won Gold Medal in Asian Classic Powerlifting Championship held in Kazakhstan. In 2021, he has represented India, and secured 6th Place in World Junior Classic Powerlifting Championship held at Halmstad, Sweden.

St Joseph Engineering College is proud of his achievements and congratulates Mr Aren on his outstanding efforts.

 

Republic Day Celebration 2022

Republic Day is a day that is imperative to each Indian citizen because it denotes the day when India became democratic and truly independent.

The 73rd Republic Day of our Nation as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav commemorating 75 years of independence was celebrated with pomp and show, zeal and spirit in SJEC at 8:30 am in the Basketball Court. Dr Yajnheswaran B, Head, Department of Civil Engineering - SJEC graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director - SJEC, Rev. Fr Alwyn Richard D'Souza, Assistant Director - SJEC, Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal - SJEC were the other dignitaries present for the occasion.

The highlight of the day was the presence of SJEC NCC Naval and Air Wing Cadets. 

The dignitaries were escorted to the flag post by Cadet Sathwik and Cadet Priyanka. As per tradition, the Chief Guest unfurled the National Flag. Cadet Riya D'Almeida of SJEC Air Wing led the gathering in saluting the National Flag and rendering the National Anthem.

Cadet Prashanth C Koti of SJEC Naval Wing requested the Chief Guest to carry out the inspection of the SJEC NCC Troops. The Chief Guest and the dignitaries were escorted by the Cadets for the Troop inspection. 

Then with due permission from the Chief Guest, both the troops with pride and enthusiasm gave the Guard of Honor led by the parade commanders of SJEC Naval and Air Wing. 

The presence of patriotism was raised by beautiful patriotic songs from the College Choir. 

The Chief Guest in his address said that we should renew our pledge to fulfill our duties and utilize our rights appropriately for the development of our motherland. He also encouraged the students to be the leading individuals in transforming our country in various fields of science and technology.

The address was followed by the vote of thanks and distribution of sweets. The function was compered by Ms Alvina Mendonca, IV Year Civil Engineering.

 

St Joseph Engineering College celebrates Independence Day by releasing its Institutional Development Plan (IDP) for NEP 2020

On the auspicious occasion of India's 75th Independence Day, St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, released the first version of its Institutional Development Plan (IDP) during the Independence Day Celebrations held at the college on 15 August 2021. 


India recently completed one year of reforms under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. NEP 2020 aims to transform the present educational systems and practices in India by making them multidisciplinary and holistic. 


Over the past year, SJEC had several discussions on NEP and came up with the IDP for implementing NEP-2020. SJECs IDP highlights the actions necessary to implement the spirit of NEP-2020 in a realistic and phased manner over the next five years. This version of the IDP will be polished further by presenting and discussing the same at multiple fora among the key stakeholders of the institution. The IDP was prepared with the suggestions and consultations of all the Faculty at the college by the IDP Core Committee led by Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean of MBA at SJEC. 


The IDP was unveiled by the Chief Guest of the Independence Day Celebrations Dr Purushothama Chippar, Professor  & Head of Mechanical Engineering, in the presence of Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director of SJEC, Rev. Fr Alwyn Richard D'Souza, Assistant Director of SJEC, Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal of SJEC and Dr Binu KG, Head of Strategy and Planning.

Webinar on "Basic Concepts of Chess"

The Department of Physical Education SJEC organized a webinar on "Basic Concepts of Chess" on 28th July 2020 from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm through Cisco WebEx platform.

The seminar started at 11.30 am sharp by moderator Ms Rachana Crata, who welcomed the attendees and speaker.The speaker of the session was our own student from II year Civil Ms Ivana Maria Furtado, an Inteational Gold Medalist in Chess. Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues Asst Physical Education Director was the coordinator of the webinar. Nearly 166 participants attended the webinar online. The session was appreciated by all the attendees.

Ms Ivana Furtado carried out the session very well. She thought all the basic concepts involved in the game of chess, common and official names of each coin and their movement.

Then she taught about the opening moves which are advantages for us to get a good opening in the game.

Ms Ivana clarified all the doubts of the attendees. The session was appreciated by all the participants.

SJEC celebrates its Annual Athletic Meet: Go for Gold-2020

St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, celebrated “Go for Gold-2020”, its Annual Athletic Meet at the College Grounds on Thursday, 12 March 2020 at 9:00 AM.

Mr Pushparaja Hegde P, Assistant General Manager, Syndicate Bank & Inteational Weight Lifter was the Chief Guest on the occasion and inaugurated the event by hoisting the flag. Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director of SJEC, Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa & Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Assistant Directors of SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal of SJEC, Mr Ajithanjaya Kumar MK, Chairperson of Sports & Community Group, Mr Nitheesh D Nayak, Convener, Ms Rachana Crasta, Sports Advisor and Ms Veneesha V Rodrigues, Assistant Physical Education Director, were present.

A colorful march fast by students was presented after which the hoisting of the flag by the dignitaries took place. As a symbolic gesture, students who participated in National Level Sports events were handed over the buing torch by the guest post which the Chief Guest declared the meet open.

Mr Aren Joy Feandes of I Year Electronics & Communication Engineering, Ms Venilla Manikanta of III Year Civil Engineering, Mr Thejas H of II Year MCA and Mr A Dhanush of III Year Mechanical Engineering and Ms Melitta Sneha Lewis of IV year Computer Science and Engineering were felicitated by the dignitaries.

Addressing the gathering Mr Pushparaja said that while sport is all about fun and enthusiasm, one should never compromise on the aspect of the discipline. He called upon the students to embrace discipline as a culture of life which will go a long way in succeeding in any sphere of life. He also stressed on the importance of health wherein he urged the students to inculcate good hygiene and focus on doing any form of physical exercise for at least an hour a day. 

The formal program concluded with the vote of thanks by Mr Nitheesh Nayak. Ms Salma Shabnam and Ms Sadhika Shetty compered the inaugural.

The inaugural was followed by a series of Athletic Events throughout the day that witnessed the active participation of both students as well as staff. The meet culminated with Valedictory involving prize distribution. Dr Prakash Pinto, Professor and Dean of MBA Department, was the Chief Guest at the Valedictory.

 

SJEC opens up cycle facility for all its staff and students

To be fit and healthy, one needs to be physically active. Regular physical activity can help protect an individual from serious diseases such as obesity, heart disease, cancer, mental illness, diabetes and arthritis. One of the best ways to reduce your risk of health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle is to ride a bicycle regularly.

Cycling is a healthy, low-impact exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from young children to older adults. It is also fun, cost effective and good for the environment.

SJEC has taken a step forward to promote this kind of healthy lifestyle by providing cycles to ride on the campus. The inaugural of the cycle for fitness campaign for the staff and students of the college was held on 11 February 2020. The blessing of the Department of Physical Education was also done at the same time.  

Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director of SJEC carried the blessing alongside Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director & Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal of SJEC who inaugurated the cycles by cutting the ribbon and riding the cycles.

The staff and students of SJEC are welcome to enjoy bicycle ride every day after the working hours.

 

Student of SJEC wins Gold Medal in Asian Classic Powerlifting Championship

Mr Aren Joy Feandes, a first-year student of Electronics and Communication Engineering of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, brought laurels to the college by winning Gold Medal in Asian Classic Powerlifting Championship held at Kazakhstan from 2nd to 8th December 2019. He secured First Place in Squat, Second Place in Deadlift and First Place in Overall below 66 kg Powerlifting Championship (Squat 180 kg, Bench Press 97.5 kg, Deadlift 215 kg, totaling up to a weight of 492.5 kg).

Mr Aren who entered sports at a very young age has 6 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Silver Medals to his credit in various State, National and Inteational level championships.

SJEC celebrates Children’s Day with students of St Michel Higher Primary School, Ammunje

The Culture and Media Committee in association with Sports and Community group of SJEC Celebrates children’s day on 14th November, 2019 which marks the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru with enthusiasm and zeal, keeping in mind his words, “I may not have time for adults, but I have enough time for children.” with the tiny tots of St Michel Higher Primary school at Ammunje. This school falls under one of the adopted village of SJEC, Vamanjoor.

The SJEC team along with the students reached the school around 10.00 AM. The Programme began with a silent prayer. The Head of the school Fr. Patric Sequeira addressed the students and appreciated Team SJEC for spending their time with their school kids and making their day a memorable one. The school Headmistress, Ms Asuntha Monteriro motivated the kids to participate in all the activities. Ms Prathima, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Chemistry addressed the students regarding importance of the day and wished all the students Happy Children’s Day. The teachers blessed the students and encouraged them to work diligently and enjoy their childhood a transient phase to optimum.

Ms Venita Navya Monteiro, Assistant Professor, Dept of Physics along with student conducted various games and fun activities on the occasion of children’s day. It was a delight to watch that satisfying smile on those young faces. The highlight of assembly was the scintillating dance performance by the cultural team of SJEC. The children were filled with exhilaration and also shook their legs at the end of the cultural programme.

The culmination of the assembly was the icing on the cake for the students, as their favorite songs were played and they shook a leg along with their facilitators. It was a fun filled day for all the kids, which would always be cherished as a fond memory.

Towards the end of the programme refreshments were served to all. The school management on behalf of the students thanked us for coming to their school and making their day a truly memorable one. It was indeed a sense of satisfaction that we all felt on achieving the objective which we had planned for. Mr Ajithanjaya Kumar, Ms Supriya Salian, Chairpersons- S&C Group, C&M group coordinated the programme. Ms Vaneesha V Rodriguez, Mr Subramanya K, Ms Prathima S, Ms Smitha D’Souza, Ms Venita Navya Monteiro, Ms Eden Sequeira and Mr Pooesh M were the facilitators. We thank Management of SJEC for giving us an opportunity for organizing such a wonderful programme.

 

VTU Institutional Cash Award for SJEC

St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, was awarded an amount of Rs One Lakh as VTU Institutional Cash Award for Sports and Cultural Achievements for the year 2017-18. The award was given by the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports, during Felicitation Function of VTU Sports Achievers held at Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bengaluru, on 19 October 2019.

The award which is a testimony to the achievements of St Joseph Engineering College at various VTU Level Sports and Cultural events was received by Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal of SJEC and Ms Vaneesha Rodrigues, Assistant Physical Education Director of the college.

 

PED: Alumni v/s Current Students Throw ball Tournament

The Alumni v/s Current Students Throwball Touament for men was held on 5th October 2019 at college Throwball Court.

Mr Ashwin Shetty, Asst Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering inaugurated the Throwball Touament. The touament started at 11.00 am. The match was played for Best of three sets. The Current student team won the match by winning 2-0 sets and Alumni team were the Runners up.

After the touament, the Prize distribution ceremony was held; Mr Ashwin Shetty, Asst Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering distributed the cash prizes to the Winners. Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues, Asst Physical Education Director was the match official. Ms Sheetal Kuchoor (batch 2018), Alumni student shared the feedback and was happy to be a part of the touament. She expressed her thoughts saying that such type of touaments must be conducted often to strengthen the alumni bond.

Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues Assistant Physical Education Director proposed the vote of thanks. Around 25 participants were present and refreshments were served for them. The matches went on till 1.20 pm.

 

PED: Alumni v/s Current Students Cricket Tournament

The Alumni v/s Current Students Cricket Touament for men was held on 21st September 2019 at college grounds. The touament started at 10.00 am with invoking God’s blessings.

Ms Rachana Crasta Sports Advisor inaugurated the Cricket match. The match was played for 6 overs. As there were three teams two Alumni and one Current Students team, the touament was conducted on a league basis.  Alumni under the captainship of Mr Darshan & team won the match and Current student Mr Ashish & team were the Runners up.

After the touament the Prize distribution ceremony was held, Rev Fr Rohith D’Costa The Assistant Director, SJEC was the Chief Guest and distributed the cash prizes for the Winners. Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues Assistant Physical Education Director proposed the vote of thanks. Mr Alister D’Souza and Mr Santhosha H Assistant Professors of Mechanical Engineering Department were the match officials. Mr Nithish S Shetty IV year Mechanical Engineering was the commentator and Ms Yashmitha IV year E&E was the Master of Ceremony around 50 participants were present and refreshments were served for them. The matches went on till 1.40 pm.

 

SJEC Wins Overall Third Place in VTU Single Zone Wrestling Championship

The Men’s & Women’s Wrestling and Judo teams of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, participated in VTU Single Zone Wrestling Championship held at SJCIT, Chikballapur, on 6th & 7th September 2019 and ended up winning Third Place the Championship.

The achievements of the team included Thejas H securing First Place in below 61kg category, Mohammed Ismail Jaseem securing Second Place in below 57kg category, Nibin Binu securing Third Place in below 97kg category, Muhammad Fayaz securing Third Place in below 92kg category, Sharul Jose securing Fourth Place in below 70kg category and Venilla Manikanta securing First Place in below 44kg category.

SJEC Girls bag Runners up Title at VTU Single Zone Hockey Tournament

The Women’s Hockey Team of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, won Runners up title at VTU Single Zone Hockey Touament held at Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT), Tumkur, on 20th April 2019.

On the way to this feat, SJEC won their Quarter Final against NMAMIT, Nitte, by 2-1 on penalties and Semi Final against KLE University, Belagavi, by 2-0, going down in the Final against CMRIT, Bengaluru, by a margin of 0-1.

SJEC Men Hockey team won the VTU Mangaluru Zone Hockey Touament held at NMAMIT, Nitte on 11th April 2019 and is selected for VTU Inter Zonal Hockey Touament at Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT), Tumkur on 21st & 22nd April 2019.

On the way to the title clash, SJEC won the quarter finals against Srinivas Institute of Technology (SIT), Valachil by 4 – 1 (Mr Nithin Kumar IV year Civil Engineering scored -2 goals, Mr Chiranjeevi H of I year E&E scored -1 goal & Mr Vivan D’Souza of IV year E&E scored -1 goal), semifinals against Sahyadri Institute of Technology and Management (SCEM), Adyar by 2-1 (Mr Nithin Kumar IV year Civil Engineering Scored -2 goals) and finals against NMAMIT, Nitte by 1-0 (Mr Avil Pinto IV year Mechanical Engineering scored -1 goal)

The Men’s Football Team of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, bagged the Runners up title in VTU Inter-Zone Football Touament held at Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT), Tumkur, on 24th & 25th March 2019. On the way to the title clash, SJEC won the first round against ACS College of Engineering (ACSCE), Bengaluru, Quarter Finals against Bangalore Institute of Technology (BIT), Bengaluru, Semi-Finals against Sir MVIT, Bengaluru and played the Finals against Gogte Institute of Technology (GIT), Belagavi.

SJEC Invited Cup Inter PUC Men & Women Throwball Tournament 2018

St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru under the Physical Education Department had organised SJEC Invited Cup Inter PUC Men & Women Throwball Touament 2018 on 27th and 28th November 2018 for Pre University Colleges of D.K and Udupi district.

The inaugural function of the touament was on 27th November 2018 at 09:30 AM in the College throw ball court. Mr Sampath Lobo, Producer/Actor – Sandalwood and Inteational Level Throwball Player graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The function was presided over by Rev. Fr. Wilfred Prakash D’souza, Director, St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru. The Guests of Honour were Rev. Fr. Rohith D’costa, Assistant Director, St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru and Dr Rio D’souza, Principal, St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru.

Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal, SJEC in his welcome speech introduced the chief guest to the gathering and defined the objective of organising this touament. In his Inaugural speech Mr Sampath Lobo, said that “Sports helps us to improve self-confidence and teaches us to receive victory and defeat equally.” Talking about St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru he said that the SJEC gives very good support to all the curricular and extracurricular activities. SJEC encourages sports participation. He wished all the very best to all participants.

In his presidential address Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza said that he is proud to say that students of SJEC has excelled in state and national level sports and college is proud to host this event at this campus which is a good venue for sports activities. Finally, he wished good luck to the participants.

Eight Men team and three Women team had participated in the touament. Teams were from Vani PU College, Padua PU College, Rosa Mystica PU College, St Raymonds PU College, VC PU College Puttur, Carmel PU College, Rosa Mystica, St Agnes PU College. The matches were going on in the parallel court prepared in the college ground. The men final match was between Rosa Mystica PU College and St Raymonds PU College. Rosa Mystica PU College emerged as the Winners of the touament while St Raymonds PU College bagged the Runners up Trophy.

The women final match was between Padua PU College and St Agnes PU College. Padua PU College emerged as the Winners of the touament while St Agnes PU College bagged the Runners up Trophy. The winners of the touament were awarded with trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 6000 and the runners-up were awarded with trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 4000.

In the Men's category Mr. Rakshith from St Raymonds PU College was awarded as the Best Thrower, Mr Nikhil from Rosa Mystica PU College was awarded as the Best Receiver and Mr Samarth from Rosa Mystica PU College was awarded as the Best All Rounder. In the Women's category Ms. Pooja from St Agnes PU College was awarded as the Best Thrower, Ms Jyothsna from Padua PU College was awarded as the Best Receiver and Ms Bhoomika from Padua PU College was awarded as the Best All Rounder.

The valedictory ceremony was held on 27th November at 4.00pm in college ground. Rev. Fr. Rohith D'Costa, Assistant Director, SJEC was the chief guest and Dr Vincent Crasta, HOD, Department of Physics, SJEC was the Guest of Honour of the programme. Mr Jeffy Sunny Dsouza, Assistant Physical Education Instructor welcomed the gathering. Mr Sampath Lobo, Producer/Actor – Sandalwood and Inteational Level Throwball Player, Mr. Alister D'Souza and Ms. Rachana Crasta, SAC Coordinators, Ms. Vaneesha Rodrigues Assistant Physical Education Director were present. Mementos to the Officials were given by Dr Vincent Crasta and individual prizes were given by Mr Sampath Lobo and the prizes to winners were distributed by Rev. Fr. Rohith D'Costa during this ceremony. Ms. Vaneesha Rodrigues rendered vote of thanks by thanking everyone who helped for the touament.

NSS & PED: Swachata Abhiyan

NSS SJEC unit & Department of Physical Education had organized a cleanliness drive on 17th November 2018 from 8:00 am till 11:30 am. The formal programme was held outside the college main gate. Apeksha & Ankitha Rai delivered the NSS prayer song. The inaugural program was addressed by Dr.Rio D'Souza, Principal SJEC. In his speech he stressed about the importance of cleanliness. He inspired the students to actively involve in the Swachata Abhiyan. He also appreciated the NSS prayer song. He congratulated the students for taking part in the programme. Loshika compered the programme. More than 60 volunteers representing NSS, YRC & Department of Physical Education participated in the cleanliness drive. The cleaning was done from Mangalajyothi till the Church complex. Bushes and grass near to the college entrance were cut by the volunteers. College had provided one grass cutter with operator and two workers to help the volunteers. Further, a tipper and all the necessary requirements to clean the surroundings were provided by the college. All the volunteers actively participated in the cleanliness drive. Drinking water facility was provided during the activity. All were provided with refreshments. Sneha Bazar sponsored cold drinks to the students.NSS coordinator Mr. Rajesh K and Ms Divya Pai, Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues, Assistant Physical Education Director and Ms Prajwal D’Souza, Mr Clavian Miranda guided the volunteers. 

 

VTU Mangaluru Zone Throwball Tournament 2018 at SJEC

The VTU Mangaluru Zonal level Throwball Touament 2018 was organised on 09th and 10th October 2018 by the Department of Physical Education of St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor.  Touament was inaugurated at the College Throwball ground on 09th October 2018 at 9:00AM, Mr. Pradeep D’Souza, Deputy Director of Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports was the chief guest and Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, , Director, SJEC was the president of the programme.    

In his Inaugural speech Mr. Pradeep D’Souza, said that “Sports was an integral part of most of the student's life before, but now technology and social media has replaced the interest of sports among younger generation. Sports not only helps us to get a good physique keeping us healthy but also teaches us to receive victory and defeat equally. This, in tu, helps us to handle different situations at our workplace in a better way”. Talking about various initiatives of the govement in supporting the sports activities, he urged the students to actively take part in sports and games, by keeping continuity and maintaining a balance between education and extra curriculum activities. He requested the participants to excel in sports and get the benefits which the govement is ready to offer.

In his presidential address Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza said that “SJEC is proud to host this event at this campus which is a good venue for sports activities. We give quality education as well as support to sports activities. Physical exercise is good for the mind, body and spirit. Team sports help teach adolescents accountability, dedication, leadership and other skills”. He thanked the organising committee for hosting the event and wished good luck to the participants.

Principal of SJEC Dr Rio D'Souza, Asst. Director Rev. Fr. Rohith D'Costa, Assistant Physical Education Directors Ms. Vaneesha Rodrigues and Mr Jeffy Sunny Dsouza were present for the inaugural. SAC Coordinators of SJEC Mr. Alister D'Souza welcomed the gathering and         Ms. Rachana Crasta, proposed the vote of thanks. Further the Chief Guest inaugurated the touament by cutting the ribbon to release the match ball and servicing the ball.

Ten teams had participated in the touament. Teams were from SJEC Vamanjoor, SCEM Adyar, PACE Mudipu, YIT Mudipu, SMVITM Udupi, AJIET Mangaluru, NMAMIT Nitte, SDMIT Ujire, MITE Moodbidri, SDIT Kenjar. The matches were going on in the parallel court prepared in the college ground. SCEM Adyar, SDMIT Ujire, SJEC Vamanjoor and YIT Mudipu qualified to the semi-finals and the final match was between SCEM Adyar and SDMIT Ujire. SCEM Adyar emerged as the Winners of the touament while SDMIT Ujire bagged the Runners up Trophy. The third place was bagged by SJEC Vamanjoor. Ms. Chinmayee of SDMIT Ujire was awarded as the Best Thrower, Ms. Priyanka of SJEC Vamanjoor was awarded as the Best Receiver and Ms. Gowri of SCEM Adyar was awarded as the Best All Rounder.

The valedictory ceremony was held on 9th October at 4.00pm in college ground. Rev. Fr. Rohith D'Costa, Assistant Director, SJEC was the chief guest and Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director, SJEC was the president of the programme. Mr Jeffy Sunny Dsouza, Assistant Physical Education Instructor welcomed the gathering. Mr. Sadananda, VTU Sports Committee Member, Mr. Alister D'Souza and Ms. Rachana Crasta, SAC Coordinators,           Ms. Vaneesha Rodrigues Assistant Physical Education Director were present. Mementos to the Officials and prizes to winners were distributed during this ceremony. Ms. Vaneesha Rodrigues rendered vote of thanks by thanking everyone who helped for the touament.

Alumni v/s Current Students Cricket & Throw-ball Tournament

The much-awaited alumni versus current students Cricket Touament for men & Throwball Touament for women were held on 15th September 2018 at college grounds. The touament started at 10:00 am with invoking God’s blessings.

Mr Alister D’Souza, Sports Advisor inaugurated the Cricket match. Both captains introduced their teams to the guests. The match was played for 10 overs and the alumni team won the match by 5 runs.

Ms Rachana Crasta Sports Advisor inaugurated the Throwball touament. Both Captains introduced their teams to the guests. The alumni team won the match by winning 2-1 sets.

After the touament the Prize distribution ceremony was held following which Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues, Assistant Physical Education Director proposed the vote of thanks. 

 

Annual Athletic - Go For Gold

The Department of Physical Education at St Joseph Engineering College - Vamanjoor, Mangaluru organized its Annual Athletic Meet GO FOR GOLD - 2018 on 15th February 2018 at the SJEC College grounds. Ms Vandana Shanbhag, Arjuna Awardee – Former Inteational Athlete, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The program was presided over by Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director – SJEC. Declaring the meet open to huge applause, Ms Vandana Shanbhag in her address highlighted the importance of sports in our lives. She also spoke about the impact of sports on health and physical fitness. She appreciated the presence of large contingent of participants and acknowledged the Management and staff for conducting the event.

The event commenced with a colourful and graceful marchpast in which more than 2500 students took part. With their colourful jerseys and banners, each class marched to the beats of St Mary’s English Higher Primary School band, and it was a sight to behold. The torch ceremony was led by Mr Maclean Pinto, Ms Natasha Zareen D’silva Medal, Ms Melitta Lewis, Mr Bindan D’Souza, who were Medal Winners in VTU Athletics, and Mr Sreehari, Medal Winner in VTU Wrestling & Represented VTU in All India Wrestling Championship. The torch was ceremoniously handed over to the Chief Guest for declaring the meet open and was followed by releasing of helium balloons. Ms Chrisel Ann Pais, VTU medal winner in Chess (3 times) represented VTU and secured 3rd place in South west zone and 4th place in All India Chess Championship, took the oath on behalf of all the participants.

Rev Fr. Wilfred Prakash D’Souza in his presidential address highlighted the importance of sportsmanship through the words of great sportspersons and wished the participants well in their events. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal - SJEC, Fr Rohith D’Costa, Asst Director - SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal – SJEC, and Dr Sudheer M, Dean - Student Welfare, were the other dignitaries present on the dais. Sports committee advisors Mr Alister D’Souza, Ms Olivia Sequeira, along with, Asst. Physical Education Director Ms Vaneesha V. Rodrigues & Mr Jeff Sunny D’Souza were also present.

The inaugural was followed by a series of Athletic Events throughout the day that witnessed active participation of Students and staff. The event culminated with a closing ceremony involving prize distribution. Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal – SJEC, was the Chief Guest for the Ceremony. 

 

PED: Annual Athletic Meet GO FOR GOLD – 2017

The Annual Athletic Meet GO FOR GOLD – 2017 was held at SJEC on February 16th 2017 in the College Grounds. Shri Ivan D’Souza, MLC and Chief Whip of the Kaataka Legislative Council was the Chief Guest for the inaugural ceremony. Mr Peter and Mrs Mary Mascarenhas, parents of Late Princia Mascarenhas, were the Guests of Honour for the programme. The programme was presided by Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director – SJEC. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal of the college, Fr Rohith D’Costa – Asst. Director, Dr Rio D’Souza Vice Principal, and Dr Vincent Crasta, Dean- SWAA were the other dignitaries on the dais. Mr Rajesh K and Mr Alister D’Souza, Sports Committee Advisors along with Ms Vaneesha Rodrigues, Physical Education Director of SJEC were also present.

The sports day commenced with the beautiful march past by the students for drum beats of St Raymond School Band. More than 2500 students participated in the March Past, class wise dressed in their class jerseys, and assembled in the College Grounds. Joyal Tauro of IV year Civil (SJEC Athletic Team Captain) led the March Past, Saleeka Shama IV year E & C (Athlete, Volley baller), Vijethraj IV year E & C (Athlete, Volley baller), Faheem IV year Mechanical (Shuttle Badminton) and Lourina D’Sa IV year Mechanical (Athlete, Volley baller) marched with the College Flag followed by the all classes starting from MBA, MCA, BE classes and the East Timor students.

The college choir group led the invocation. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director – SJEC welcomed the gathering. Following by the flag hoisting by the Chief Guest, the Torch Ceremony led by Ms Kripa Maria Sebastian from IV-year CS (Medal Winner in Hammer Throw) commenced and the torch was carried by Mr Gokul Martis IV-year CS (Medal Winner Athlete), Mr Antony Varghese IV-year Mechanical (Medal Winner Athlete), Mr George Varghese IV-year Mechanical (Medal Winner Athlete), and Mr Mohith Swaroop IV year Civil (Athlete, Foot baller). The torch was handed over to the Chief Guest to declare the meet open. Balloons were released into the sky by the Guests of Honour and top athletes of SJEC.

Declaring the meet open, Shri Ivan D’Souza in his address spoke to the students about the importance of sports in developing the courage and strength to face life’s challenges. Drawing from his own experiences, he pointed to the relevance of sports and games in an individual’s success and related it to the Nation’s growth. The event also paid homage to Late Princia Mascarenhas, whose untimely death recently had caused much pain and grievance to all.

Ms Chrisel Pais IV-year Mechanical (Medal Winner Athlete) took the oath on behalf of all the participants. As mark of celebration 10 Kadina traditional crackers were lit out. Mr Rajesh K, Chairperson sports committee proposed the vote of thanks. Mr Joel Concessao compeered the programme.

The closing of the ceremony of annual athletic meet was held at 5:30 pm. Vice Principal Dr Rio D’Souza was the Chief Guest. Mr Alister Dsouza, Chairperson of Sports Committee welcomed the gathering. Rev. Fr Rohit D’Costa Asst. Director of SJEC presided over the function.                                     

Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues - Physical Director proposed the vote of thanks and Mr Nithin Heraje conducted the prize distribution ceremony. The college flag was lowered and the meet was declared closed and concluded with the College Anthem.

VTU Mangalore Zone Men Volley Ball Tournament

VolleyBall (MEN)

SJEC organised the VTU Mangalore Zone Men Volleyball Touament on 18th & 19th, February 2014 at the College Ground. Twenty teams participated out of 23 Colleges. Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management won the touament. Alva’s Institute of Engineering & Technology is the runners-up. SJEC bagged the 3rd position, followed by MITE – Moodbidri at 4th position.

Mr Ahmed Aslam of Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management was awarded the Best Spiker of the touament. Mr Abhishek Amin of Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management was awarded the Best Passer of the touament, and Mr Ajith Kumar of Alva’s Institute of Engineering & Technology was awarded the Best Allrounder of the touament.

SJEC Men's Basketball team secured the Runners up place in the VTU Mangaluru division Basketball Touament held at NMAMIT Nitte on 28 November 2022. The Management - SJEC congratulates the Students and the Physical Education Directors for this overwhelming achievement at university level event.

SJEC Student bags First Place in National Junior Classic Powerlifting Championship

Mr Aren Joy Fernandes, a third-year student of Electronics and Communication Engineering of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, brought laurels to the college by winning First Place in National Junior Classic Powerlifting Championship held at Alappuzha, Kerala from 9 to 13 April 2022. He created national records by lifting Squat 230 kg, and Dead Lift 283 kg amassing a total weight of 653 kg. Alongside writing 3 national records, he also lifted a 140 kg Bench Press during the event.

Mr Aren, son of Mr Jude David Fernandes and Mrs Anandi Diana Fernandes, entered sports at a very young age and has 6 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Silver Medals to his credit in various State, National and International level championships.

In 2019, Mr Aren won Gold Medal in Asian Classic Powerlifting Championship held in Kazakhstan. In 2021, he has represented India, and secured 6th Place in World Junior Classic Powerlifting Championship held at Halmstad, Sweden.

St Joseph Engineering College is proud of his achievements and congratulates Mr Aren on his outstanding efforts.

Republic Day Celebration 2022

Republic Day is a day that is imperative to each Indian citizen because it denotes the day when India became democratic and truly independent.

The 73rd Republic Day of our Nation as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav commemorating 75 years of independence was celebrated with pomp and show, zeal and spirit in SJEC at 8:30 am in the Basketball Court. Dr Yajnheswaran B, Head, Department of Civil Engineering - SJEC graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director - SJEC, Rev. Fr Alwyn Richard D'Souza, Assistant Director - SJEC, Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal - SJEC were the other dignitaries present for the occasion.

The highlight of the day was the presence of SJEC NCC Naval and Air Wing Cadets.

The dignitaries were escorted to the flag post by Cadet Sathwik and Cadet Priyanka. As per tradition, the Chief Guest unfurled the National Flag. Cadet Riya D'Almeida of SJEC Air Wing led the gathering in saluting the National Flag and rendering the National Anthem.

Cadet Prashanth C Koti of SJEC Naval Wing requested the Chief Guest to carry out the inspection of the SJEC NCC Troops. The Chief Guest and the dignitaries were escorted by the Cadets for the Troop inspection.

Then with due permission from the Chief Guest, both the troops with pride and enthusiasm gave the Guard of Honor led by the parade commanders of SJEC Naval and Air Wing.

The presence of patriotism was raised by beautiful patriotic songs from the College Choir.

The Chief Guest in his address said that we should renew our pledge to fulfill our duties and utilize our rights appropriately for the development of our motherland. He also encouraged the students to be the leading individuals in transforming our country in various fields of science and technology.

The address was followed by the vote of thanks and distribution of sweets. The function was compered by Ms Alvina Mendonca, IV Year Civil Engineering.

St Joseph Engineering College celebrates Independence Day by releasing its Institutional Development Plan (IDP) for NEP 2020

On the auspicious occasion of India's 75th Independence Day, St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, released the first version of its Institutional Development Plan (IDP) during the Independence Day Celebrations held at the college on 15 August 2021.

India recently completed one year of reforms under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. NEP 2020 aims to transform the present educational systems and practices in India by making them multidisciplinary and holistic.

Over the past year, SJEC had several discussions on NEP and came up with the IDP for implementing NEP-2020. SJECs IDP highlights the actions necessary to implement the spirit of NEP-2020 in a realistic and phased manner over the next five years. This version of the IDP will be polished further by presenting and discussing the same at multiple fora among the key stakeholders of the institution. The IDP was prepared with the suggestions and consultations of all the Faculty at the college by the IDP Core Committee led by Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean of MBA at SJEC.

The IDP was unveiled by the Chief Guest of the Independence Day Celebrations Dr Purushothama Chippar, Professor & Head of Mechanical Engineering, in the presence of Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director of SJEC, Rev. Fr Alwyn Richard D'Souza, Assistant Director of SJEC, Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal of SJEC and Dr Binu KG, Head of Strategy and Planning.

Independence Day was celebrated with great gusto through a flag hoisting ceremony in the presence of staff and students of the college. While remembering the contributions of all freedom fighters, the Chief Guest called upon everyone to contribute and work towards the overall development of India as a global leader.

The Department of Physical Education SJEC organized a webinar on "Basic Concepts of Chess" on 28th July 2020 from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm through Cisco WebEx platform.

The seminar started at 11.30 am sharp by moderator Ms Rachana Crata, who welcomed the attendees and speaker.The speaker of the session was our own student from II year Civil Ms Ivana Maria Furtado, an International Gold Medalist in Chess. Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues Asst Physical Education Director was the coordinator of the webinar. Nearly 166 participants attended the webinar online. The session was appreciated by all the attendees.

Ms Ivana Furtado carried out the session very well. She thought all the basic concepts involved in the game of chess, common and official names of each coin and their movement.

Then she taught about the opening moves which are advantages for us to get a good opening in the game.

Ms Ivana clarified all the doubts of the attendees. The session was appreciated by all the participants

SJEC celebrates its Annual Athletic Meet: Go for Gold-2020

St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, celebrated “Go for Gold-2020”, its Annual Athletic Meet at the College Grounds on Thursday, 12 March 2020 at 9:00 AM.

Mr Pushparaja Hegde P, Assistant General Manager, Syndicate Bank & International Weight Lifter was the Chief Guest on the occasion and inaugurated the event by hoisting the flag. Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director of SJEC, Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa & Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Assistant Directors of SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal of SJEC, Mr Ajithanjaya Kumar MK, Chairperson of Sports & Community Group, Mr Nitheesh D Nayak, Convener, Ms Rachana Crasta, Sports Advisor and Ms Veneesha V Rodrigues, Assistant Physical Education Director, were present.

A colorful march fast by students was presented after which the hoisting of the flag by the dignitaries took place. As a symbolic gesture, students who participated in National Level Sports events were handed over the burning torch by the guest post which the Chief Guest declared the meet open.

Mr Aren Joy Fernandes of I Year Electronics & Communication Engineering, Ms Venilla Manikanta of III Year Civil Engineering, Mr Thejas H of II Year MCA and Mr A Dhanush of III Year Mechanical Engineering and Ms Melitta Sneha Lewis of IV year Computer Science and Engineering were felicitated by the dignitaries.

Addressing the gathering Mr Pushparaja said that while sport is all about fun and enthusiasm, one should never compromise on the aspect of the discipline. He called upon the students to embrace discipline as a culture of life which will go a long way in succeeding in any sphere of life. He also stressed on the importance of health wherein he urged the students to inculcate good hygiene and focus on doing any form of physical exercise for at least an hour a day.

The formal program concluded with the vote of thanks by Mr Nitheesh Nayak. Ms Salma Shabnam and Ms Sadhika Shetty compered the inaugural.

The inaugural was followed by a series of Athletic Events throughout the day that witnessed the active participation of both students as well as staff. The meet culminated with Valedictory involving prize distribution. Dr Prakash Pinto, Professor and Dean of MBA Department, was the Chief Guest at the Valedictory.

SJEC opens up cycle facility for all its staff and students

To be fit and healthy, one needs to be physically active. Regular physical activity can help protect an individual from serious diseases such as obesity, heart disease, cancer, mental illness, diabetes and arthritis. One of the best ways to reduce your risk of health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle is to ride a bicycle regularly.

Cycling is a healthy, low-impact exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from young children to older adults. It is also fun, cost effective and good for the environment.

SJEC has taken a step forward to promote this kind of healthy lifestyle by providing cycles to ride on the campus. The inaugural of the cycle for fitness campaign for the staff and students of the college was held on 11 February 2020. The blessing of the Department of Physical Education was also done at the same time.

Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director of SJEC carried the blessing alongside Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director & Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal of SJEC who inaugurated the cycles by cutting the ribbon and riding the cycles.

The staff and students of SJEC are welcome to enjoy bicycle ride every day after the working hours.

Student of SJEC wins Gold Medal in Asian Classic Powerlifting Championship

Mr Aren Joy Fernandes, a first-year student of Electronics and Communication Engineering of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, brought laurels to the college by winning Gold Medal in Asian Classic Powerlifting Championship held at Kazakhstan from 2nd to 8th December 2019. He secured First Place in Squat, Second Place in Deadlift and First Place in Overall below 66 kg Powerlifting Championship (Squat 180 kg, Bench Press 97.5 kg, Deadlift 215 kg, totaling up to a weight of 492.5 kg).

Mr Aren who entered sports at a very young age has 6 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Silver Medals to his credit in various State, National and International level championships.

The management of St Joseph Engineering College is proud of his achievements and honored Mr Aren Fernandes for his outstanding efforts in a felicitation program held at the college.

SJEC celebrates Children’s Day with students of St Michel Higher Primary School, Ammunje

The Culture and Media Committee in association with Sports and Community group of SJEC Celebrates children’s day on 14th November, 2019 which marks the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru with enthusiasm and zeal, keeping in mind his words, “I may not have time for adults, but I have enough time for children.” with the tiny tots of St Michel Higher Primary school at Ammunje. This school falls under one of the adopted village of SJEC, Vamanjoor.

The SJEC team along with the students reached the school around 10.00 AM. The Programme began with a silent prayer. The Head of the school Fr. Patric Sequeira addressed the students and appreciated Team SJEC for spending their time with their school kids and making their day a memorable one. The school Headmistress, Ms Asuntha Monteriro motivated the kids to participate in all the activities. Ms Prathima, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Chemistry addressed the students regarding importance of the day and wished all the students Happy Children’s Day. The teachers blessed the students and encouraged them to work diligently and enjoy their childhood a transient phase to optimum.

Ms Venita Navya Monteiro, Assistant Professor, Dept of Physics along with student conducted various games and fun activities on the occasion of children’s day. It was a delight to watch that satisfying smile on those young faces. The highlight of assembly was the scintillating dance performance by the cultural team of SJEC. The children were filled with exhilaration and also shook their legs at the end of the cultural programme.

The culmination of the assembly was the icing on the cake for the students, as their favorite songs were played and they shook a leg along with their facilitators. It was a fun filled day for all the kids, which would always be cherished as a fond memory.

Towards the end of the programme refreshments were served to all. The school management on behalf of the students thanked us for coming to their school and making their day a truly memorable one. It was indeed a sense of satisfaction that we all felt on achieving the objective which we had planned for. Mr Ajithanjaya Kumar, Ms Supriya Salian, Chairpersons- S&C Group, C&M group coordinated the programme. Ms Vaneesha V Rodriguez, Mr Subramanya K, Ms Prathima S, Ms Smitha D’Souza, Ms Venita Navya Monteiro, Ms Eden Sequeira and Mr Poornesh M were the facilitators. VTU Institutional Cash Award for SJEC

St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, was awarded an amount of Rs One Lakh as VTU Institutional Cash Award for Sports and Cultural Achievements for the year 2017-18. The award was given by the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports, during Felicitation Function of VTU Sports Achievers held at Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bengaluru, on 19 October 2019.

The award which is a testimony to the achievements of St Joseph Engineering College at various VTU Level Sports and Cultural events was received by Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal of SJEC and Ms Vaneesha Rodrigues, Assistant Physical Education Director of the college.

PED: Alumni v/s Current Students Throw ball Tournament

The Alumni v/s Current Students Throwball Tournament for men was held on 5th October 2019 at college Throwball Court.

Mr Ashwin Shetty, Asst Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering inaugurated the Throwball Tournament. The tournament started at 11.00 am. The match was played for Best of three sets. The Current student team won the match by winning 2-0 sets and Alumni team were the Runners up.

After the tournament, the Prize distribution ceremony was held; Mr Ashwin Shetty, Asst Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering distributed the cash prizes to the Winners. Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues, Asst Physical Education Director was the match official. Ms Sheetal Kuchoor (batch 2018), Alumni student shared the feedback and was happy to be a part of the tournament. She expressed her thoughts saying that such type of tournaments must be conducted often to strengthen the alumni bond.

Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues Assistant Physical Education Director proposed the vote of thanks. Around 25 participants were present and refreshments were served for them. The matches went on till 1.20 pm.

PED: Alumni v/s Current Students Cricket Tournament

The Alumni v/s Current Students Cricket Tournament for men was held on 21st September 2019 at college grounds. The tournament started at 10.00 am with invoking God’s blessings.

Ms Rachana Crasta Sports Advisor inaugurated the Cricket match. The match was played for 6 overs. As there were three teams two Alumni and one Current Students team, the tournament was conducted on a league basis. Alumni under the captainship of Mr Darshan & team won the match and Current student Mr Ashish & team were the Runners up.

After the tournament the Prize distribution ceremony was held, Rev Fr Rohith D’Costa The Assistant Director, SJEC was the Chief Guest and distributed the cash prizes for the Winners. Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues Assistant Physical Education Director proposed the vote of thanks. Mr Alister D’Souza and Mr Santhosha H Assistant Professors of Mechanical Engineering Department were the match officials. Mr Nithish S Shetty IV year Mechanical Engineering was the commentator and Ms Yashmitha IV year E&E was the Master of Ceremony around 50 participants were present and refreshments were served for them. The matches went on till 1.40 pm.

SJEC Wins Overall Third Place in VTU Single Zone Wrestling Championship

The Men’s & Women’s Wrestling and Judo teams of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, participated in VTU Single Zone Wrestling Championship held at SJCIT, Chikballapur, on 6th & 7th September 2019 and ended up winning Third Place the Championship.

The achievements of the team included Thejas H securing First Place in below 61kg category, Mohammed Ismail Jaseem securing Second Place in below 57kg category, Nibin Binu securing Third Place in below 97kg category, Muhammad Fayaz securing Third Place in below 92kg category, Sharul Jose securing Fourth Place in below 70kg category and Venilla Manikanta securing First Place in below 44kg category.

SJEC Girls bag Runners up Title at VTU Single Zone Hockey Tournament

The Women’s Hockey Team of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, won Runners up title at VTU Single Zone Hockey Tournament held at Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT), Tumkur, on 20th April 2019.

On the way to this feat, SJEC won their Quarter Final against NMAMIT, Nitte, by 2-1 on penalties and Semi Final against KLE University, Belagavi, by 2-0, going down in the Final against CMRIT, Bengaluru, by a margin of 0-1.

SJEC Invited Cup Inter PUC Men & Women Throwball Tournament 2018

St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru under the Physical Education Department had organised SJEC Invited Cup Inter PUC Men & Women Throwball Tournament 2018 on 27th and 28th November 2018 for Pre University Colleges of D.K and Udupi district.

The inaugural function of the tournament was on 27th November 2018 at 09:30 AM in the College throw ball court. Mr Sampath Lobo, Producer/Actor – Sandalwood and International Level Throwball Player graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The function was presided over by Rev. Fr. Wilfred Prakash D’souza, Director, St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru. The Guests of Honour were Rev. Fr. Rohith D’costa, Assistant Director, St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru and Dr Rio D’souza, Principal, St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru.

Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal, SJEC in his welcome speech introduced the chief guest to the gathering and defined the objective of organising this tournament. In his Inaugural speech Mr Sampath Lobo, said that “Sports helps us to improve self-confidence and teaches us to receive victory and defeat equally.” Talking about St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru he said that the SJEC gives very good support to all the curricular and extracurricular activities. SJEC encourages sports participation. He wished all the very best to all participants.

In his presidential address Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza said that he is proud to say that students of SJEC has excelled in state and national level sports and college is proud to host this event at this campus which is a good venue for sports activities. Finally, he wished good luck to the participants.

Asst. Director of SJEC Rev. Fr. Rohith D'Costa, SAC Coordinator Ms. Rachana Crasta, Assistant Physical Education Director Ms. Vaneesha Rodrigues and Assistant Physical Education Instructor Mr Jeffy Sunny Dsouza were present for the inaugural. Mr. Alister D'Souza, SAC Coordinator proposed the vote of thanks. Further the Chief Guest inaugurated the tournament by cutting the ribbon to release the match ball and servicing the ball.

Eight Men team and three Women team had participated in the tournament. Teams were from Vani PU College, Padua PU College, Rosa Mystica PU College, St Raymonds PU College, VC PU College Puttur, Carmel PU College, Rosa Mystica, St Agnes PU College. The matches were going on in the parallel court prepared in the college ground. The men final match was between Rosa Mystica PU College and St Raymonds PU College. Rosa Mystica PU College emerged as the Winners of the tournament while St Raymonds PU College bagged the Runners up Trophy.

The women final match was between Padua PU College and St Agnes PU College. Padua PU College emerged as the Winners of the tournament while St Agnes PU College bagged the Runners up Trophy. The winners of the tournament were awarded with trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 6000 and the runners-up were awarded with trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 4000.

In the Men's category Mr. Rakshith from St Raymonds PU College was awarded as the Best Thrower, Mr Nikhil from Rosa Mystica PU College was awarded as the Best Receiver and Mr Samarth from Rosa Mystica PU College was awarded as the Best All Rounder. In the Women's category Ms. Pooja from St Agnes PU College was awarded as the Best Thrower, Ms Jyothsna from Padua PU College was awarded as the Best Receiver and Ms Bhoomika from Padua PU College was awarded as the Best All Rounder.

The valedictory ceremony was held on 27th November at 4.00pm in college ground. Rev. Fr. Rohith D'Costa, Assistant Director, SJEC was the chief guest and Dr Vincent Crasta, HOD, Department of Physics, SJEC was the Guest of Honour of the programme. Mr Jeffy Sunny Dsouza, Assistant Physical Education Instructor welcomed the gathering. Mr Sampath Lobo, Producer/Actor – Sandalwood and International Level Throwball Player, Mr. Alister D'Souza and Ms. Rachana Crasta, SAC Coordinators, Ms. Vaneesha Rodrigues Assistant Physical Education Director were present. Mementos to the Officials were given by Dr Vincent Crasta and individual prizes were given by Mr Sampath Lobo and the prizes to winners were distributed by Rev. Fr. Rohith D'Costa during this ceremony. Ms. Vaneesha Rodrigues rendered vote of thanks by thanking everyone who helped for the tournament.

The Tournament was appreciated by all the participants and team managers. Everyone expressed their gladness about the way the tournament was organised, and facilities provided to them in campus. The event formally ended by singing the National Anthem.

NSS & PED: Swachata Abhiyan

NSS SJEC unit & Department of Physical Education had organized a cleanliness drive on 17th November 2018 from 8:00 am till 11:30 am. The formal programme was held outside the college main gate. Apeksha & Ankitha Rai delivered the NSS prayer song. The inaugural program was addressed by Dr.Rio D'Souza, Principal SJEC. In his speech he stressed about the importance of cleanliness. He inspired the students to actively involve in the Swachata Abhiyan. He also appreciated the NSS prayer song. He congratulated the students for taking part in the programme. Loshika compered the programme. More than 60 volunteers representing NSS, YRC & Department of Physical Education participated in the cleanliness drive. The cleaning was done from Mangalajyothi till the Church complex. Bushes and grass near to the college entrance were cut by the volunteers. College had provided one grass cutter with operator and two workers to help the volunteers. Further, a tipper and all the necessary requirements to clean the surroundings were provided by the college. All the volunteers actively participated in the cleanliness drive. Drinking water facility was provided during the activity. All were provided with refreshments. Sneha Bazar sponsored cold drinks to the students.NSS coordinator Mr. Rajesh K and Ms Divya Pai, Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues, Assistant Physical Education Director and Ms Prajwal D’Souza, Mr Clavian Miranda guided the volunteers.

VTU Mangaluru Zone Throwball Tournament 2018 at SJEC

The VTU Mangaluru Zonal level Throwball Tournament 2018 was organised on 09th and 10th October 2018 by the Department of Physical Education of St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor. Tournament was inaugurated at the College Throwball ground on 09th October 2018 at 9:00AM, Mr. Pradeep D’Souza, Deputy Director of Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports was the chief guest and Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, , Director, SJEC was the president of the programme.

In his Inaugural speech Mr. Pradeep D’Souza, said that “Sports was an integral part of most of the student's life before, but now technology and social media has replaced the interest of sports among younger generation. Sports not only helps us to get a good physique keeping us healthy but also teaches us to receive victory and defeat equally. This, in turn, helps us to handle different situations at our workplace in a better way”. Talking about various initiatives of the government in supporting the sports activities, he urged the students to actively take part in sports and games, by keeping continuity and maintaining a balance between education and extra curriculum activities. He requested the participants to excel in sports and get the benefits which the government is ready to offer.

In his presidential address Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza said that “SJEC is proud to host this event at this campus which is a good venue for sports activities. We give quality education as well as support to sports activities. Physical exercise is good for the mind, body and spirit. Team sports help teach adolescents accountability, dedication, leadership and other skills”. He thanked the organising committee for hosting the event and wished good luck to the participants.

The matches were going on in the parallel court prepared in the college ground. SCEM Adyar, SDMIT Ujire, SJEC Vamanjoor and YIT Mudipu qualified to the semi-finals and the final match was between SCEM Adyar and SDMIT Ujire. SCEM Adyar emerged as the Winners of the tournament while SDMIT Ujire bagged the Runners up Trophy. The third place was bagged by SJEC Vamanjoor. Ms. Chinmayee of SDMIT Ujire was awarded as the Best Thrower, Ms. Priyanka of SJEC Vamanjoor was awarded as the Best Receiver and Ms. Gowri of SCEM Adyar was awarded as the Best All Rounder.

The much-awaited alumni versus current students Cricket Tournament for men & Throwball Tournament for women were held on 15th September 2018 at college grounds. The tournament started at 10:00 am with invoking God’s blessings.

Mr Alister D’Souza, Sports Advisor inaugurated the Cricket match. Both captains introduced their teams to the guests. The match was played for 10 overs and the alumni team won the match by 5 runs. Ms Rachana Crasta Sports Advisor inaugurated the Throwball tournament. Both Captains introduced their teams to the guests. The alumni team won the match by winning 2-1 sets. After the tournament the Prize distribution ceremony was held following which Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues, Assistant Physical Education Director proposed the vote of thanks.

Annual Athletic - Go For Gold

The Department of Physical Education at St Joseph Engineering College - Vamanjoor, Mangaluru organized its Annual Athletic Meet GO FOR GOLD - 2018 on 15th February 2018 at the SJEC College grounds. Ms Vandana Shanbhag, Arjuna Awardee – Former International Athlete, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The program was presided over by Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director – SJEC. Declaring the meet open to huge applause, Ms Vandana Shanbhag in her address highlighted the importance of sports in our lives. She also spoke about the impact of sports on health and physical fitness. She appreciated the presence of large contingent of participants and acknowledged the Management and staff for conducting the event.

The event commenced with a colourful and graceful marchpast in which more than 2500 students took part. With their colourful jerseys and banners, each class marched to the beats of St Mary’s English Higher Primary School band, and it was a sight to behold. The torch ceremony was led by Mr Maclean Pinto, Ms Natasha Zareen D’silva Medal, Ms Melitta Lewis, Mr Bindan D’Souza, who were Medal Winners in VTU Athletics, and Mr Sreehari, Medal Winner in VTU Wrestling & Represented VTU in All India Wrestling Championship. The torch was ceremoniously handed over to the Chief Guest for declaring the meet open and was followed by releasing of helium balloons. Ms Chrisel Ann Pais, VTU medal winner in Chess (3 times) represented VTU and secured 3rd place in South west zone and 4th place in All India Chess Championship, took the oath on behalf of all the participants.

Rev Fr. Wilfred Prakash D’Souza in his presidential address highlighted the importance of sportsmanship through the words of great sportspersons and wished the participants well in their events. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal - SJEC, Fr Rohith D’Costa, Asst Director - SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal – SJEC, and Dr Sudheer M, Dean - Student Welfare, were the other dignitaries present on the dais. Sports committee advisors Mr Alister D’Souza, Ms Olivia Sequeira, along with, Asst. Physical Education Director Ms Vaneesha V. Rodrigues & Mr Jeff Sunny D’Souza were also present.

The inaugural was followed by a series of Athletic Events throughout the day that witnessed active participation of Students and staff. The event culminated with a closing ceremony involving prize distribution. Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal – SJEC, was the Chief Guest for the Ceremony.

The Annual Athletic Meet GO FOR GOLD – 2017 was held at SJEC on February 16th 2017 in the College Grounds. Shri Ivan D’Souza, MLC and Chief Whip of the Karnataka Legislative Council was the Chief Guest for the inaugural ceremony. Mr Peter and Mrs Mary Mascarenhas, parents of Late Princia Mascarenhas, were the Guests of Honour for the programme. The programme was presided by Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director – SJEC. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal of the college, Fr Rohith D’Costa – Asst. Director, Dr Rio D’Souza Vice Principal, and Dr Vincent Crasta, Dean- SWAA were the other dignitaries on the dais. Mr Rajesh K and Mr Alister D’Souza, Sports Committee Advisors along with Ms Vaneesha Rodrigues, Physical Education Director of SJEC were also present.

The sports day commenced with the beautiful march past by the students for drum beats of St Raymond School Band. More than 2500 students participated in the March Past, class wise dressed in their class jerseys, and assembled in the College Grounds. Joyal Tauro of IV year Civil (SJEC Athletic Team Captain) led the March Past, Saleeka Shama IV year E & C (Athlete, Volley baller), Vijethraj IV year E & C (Athlete, Volley baller), Faheem IV year Mechanical (Shuttle Badminton) and Lourina D’Sa IV year Mechanical (Athlete, Volley baller) marched with the College Flag followed by the all classes starting from MBA, MCA, BE classes and the East Timor students.

The college choir group led the invocation. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director – SJEC welcomed the gathering. Following by the flag hoisting by the Chief Guest, the Torch Ceremony led by Ms Kripa Maria Sebastian from IV-year CS (Medal Winner in Hammer Throw) commenced and the torch was carried by Mr Gokul Martis IV-year CS (Medal Winner Athlete), Mr Antony Varghese IV-year Mechanical (Medal Winner Athlete), Mr George Varghese IV-year Mechanical (Medal Winner Athlete), and Mr Mohith Swaroop IV year Civil (Athlete, Foot baller). The torch was handed over to the Chief Guest to declare the meet open. Balloons were released into the sky by the Guests of Honour and top athletes of SJEC.

Declaring the meet open, Shri Ivan D’Souza in his address spoke to the students about the importance of sports in developing the courage and strength to face life’s challenges. Drawing from his own experiences, he pointed to the relevance of sports and games in an individual’s success and related it to the Nation’s growth. The event also paid homage to Late Princia Mascarenhas, whose untimely death recently had caused much pain and grievance to all.

Ms Chrisel Pais IV-year Mechanical (Medal Winner Athlete) took the oath on behalf of all the participants. As mark of celebration 10 Kadina traditional crackers were lit out. Mr Rajesh K, Chairperson sports committee proposed the vote of thanks. Mr Joel Concessao compeered the programme.

The closing of the ceremony of annual athletic meet was held at 5:30 pm. Vice Principal Dr Rio D’Souza was the Chief Guest. Mr Alister Dsouza, Chairperson of Sports Committee welcomed the gathering. Rev. Fr Rohit D’Costa Asst. Director of SJEC presided over the function.

Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues - Physical Director proposed the vote of thanks and Mr Nithin Heraje conducted the prize distribution ceremony. The college flag was lowered and the meet was declared closed and concluded with the College Anthem.

VTU Mangalore Zone Men Volley Ball Tournament

VolleyBall (MEN)

SJEC organised the VTU Mangalore Zone Men Volleyball Tournament on 18th & 19th, February 2014 at the College Ground. Twenty teams participated out of 23 Colleges. Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management won the tournament. Alva’s Institute of Engineering & Technology is the runners-up. SJEC bagged the 3rd position, followed by MITE – Moodbidri at 4th position.

Mr Ahmed Aslam of Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management was awarded the Best Spiker of the tournament. Mr Abhishek Amin of Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management was awarded the Best Passer of the tournament, and Mr Ajith Kumar of Alva’s Institute of Engineering & Technology was awarded the Best Allrounder of the tournament.
