We follow a learner centered philosophy in the Department of Business Administration. The learners here think beyond the limits and achieve excellence with an enriching learning experience. We offer MBA programme of Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, Karnataka which includes rigorous courses that are contemporary in nature with a perspective of global business scenario . The academic curriculum supplements class room learning with corporate exposure through compulsory organization based project work spanning a period of ten weeks. In addition a continuous industry-institute interaction in the form of special guest lectures, workshops, practical assignments and conferences strengthen practical learning. We prepare graduates future ready to face the distinct business challenges and strive to produce talents who can contribute to the growth of our nation.

Therefore, we provide a learning environment to learners who can better respond to the fast changing circumstances and unexpected challenges they will inevitably face after graduation.

About the Department:

The Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College set sail in the year 2007. A non-profitable and socially responsive institute was established to cater to the management and entrepreneurial needs of the society. The Department of Business Administration offers a Two Year full time MBA programme approved by AICTE, Ministry of HRD, Government of India and is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, Karnataka. The MBA programme is offered in the tradition of scholastic excellence for training for life.

MISSION: To achieve excellence through high quality management education and make the management education relevant and challenging. To develop competent, ethically sensitive and committed leaders. To embrace continuous learning in a rapidly changing business environment through research thereby contributing to the stock of intellectual capital.
Accordingly, the courses offered in the department are contemporary in nature and directly relevant to the present day industry needs. The department provides a conducive and stimulating environment that will lead to business intelligence, character formation and development of individual talents and abilities.

Pedagogy:

Lectures, case analysis, seminars, simulation games and exercises, group discussions and practical project work are commonly used to develop conceptual, analytical and decision making skills to prepare the students to face the challenges of the complex business and organizational environment.

Besides the regular academic curriculum, the students are also involved in inter business school competitions and constant interaction with the industry, thus strengthening their practical orientation and developing themselves into future business leaders.

About the Teaching Staff:

Faculty members are the key for the transformation process that is critical for the success of an institution. The faculty of the Department of Business Administration consist some of the finest in the academia. Many of them are research scholars with Doctoral accomplishments. Our faculty comprises dynamic individuals with diverse experiences, keen insight and an absolute understanding of their subjects. The department has full time faculty in the core management disciplines and functional areas of management. It has also a panel of eminent management experts and senior practicing managers.

The faculty is really what distinguishes the Department of Business Administration, SJEC . They are drawn from among the best minds in the country, especially in the fields of finance, economics, human resource, marketing and operations and share among themselves a wealth of experience. This gives the department a unique professional standing in the country.

Department has always been a hub of innovative activity and faculty members collaborate with the industry as well as other academic institutions. They are continuously on the lookout for opportunities to add to the body of knowledge in their chosen field. They involve themselves in various Conferences, Seminars, Workshops and Faculty Development Programmes. Papers of the faculty are being published in various national as well as international journals.

The classroom approach used in the department is highly interactive and faculty members are constantly looking for new and effective ways to engage their pupils in the learning process.

The main focus is on the student centered learning, where the emphasis is on the individual development of the learner throughout their time at the institute. Additionally, visiting faculty and corporate professionals provide the industrial connection. They directly influence the quality of education.

Facilities at the Department:

Library:

The department has a spacious library having an excellent collection of latest books, magazines, journals and periodicals on Management. In addition to the print versions of journals the department has Emerald on line journal database. The library remains open for nearly 12 hours on all working days for the benefit of students and faculty. Apart from the department library the students have access to the central library of the SJEC for traditional and digital references.

Computer Laboratory:

The department has a separate computer lab equipped with the latest technology and trained assistant to help the students learn through hands on experience.It also has Campus Wi-Fi network for internet access for faculty, students and staff.

Placement and Training Cell:

The college has a creditable placement record. The Placement and Training Cell is headed by a qualified and experienced Placement Officer. The Cell conducts regular training programmes for personality development, entrepreneurship development etc. and assists the students for project placement as well as final placement. On-campus and off-campus placement interviews are arranged during the final semester.

Personality Development Activities:

Workshops and training on soft skills and personality development are arranged with reputed management consultants to map the personality profile of students, identify their strengths and weaknesses and provide specialized training to correct any deficiency. Recognizing the need and importance of effective communication in Management, specialized programmes on communication skills are conducted regularly for all the students. These sessions involve extensive use of interactive and practice oriented training to develop skills and build up confidence.

Industrial visits/tours:

The study at SJEC aims at bridging the gap in thought process and out beat the theoretical knowledge through the essence of practicality. Keeping the concept of corporate exposure in mind, industrial visits are scheduled every year.

SJEC Gavel Club

The Club has been granted the status of Gavel Club by the Toastmasters International on 1st Jan, 2010. Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of meeting locations. Participants practice and learn skills by filling a meeting role, ranging from giving a prepared speech or an impromptu one to serving as timer, evaluator or grammarian.

National Seminar/Symposia/Workshops/Special Lecture Series

The department organizes national seminars, symposia and workshops where contemporary topics are discussed and debated.

Special lectures are organized periodically to supplement the classroom teaching. Experts from industry and academia are invited to deliver lectures on contemporary management topics and industry practices. These lectures provide a wide exposure to the students on the existing practices and emerging concepts and help them to face the dynamic business environment with confidence.
