Master of Computer Applications
The Master of Computer Applications (MCA) programme was started in the year 2008 with an intake of 60 students. The department offers a three years course approved by AICTE, Government of India and is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, Karnataka.

Computer Applications at St Joseph is composed of core classes organized around the study of design and analysis techniques used to write software in various application domains along with details about the internal workings of computers and networks. Elective classes in areas such as Rich Internet Applications, mobile computing, Advanced computer networks, graphics, Unix System programming, Artificial Intelligence and others allow students to explore areas of individual interest

To develop into a department with enlightened educators and world-class infrastructure, that produces computer professionals with a strong sense of service and human values at the core, who will emerge as leaders in society by their outstanding competence in computer technology and applications

MISSION

To support postgraduate studies in computer technology and applications, while continuously encouraging staff and students to excel in academics and research, all the time keeping up with emerging technologies and systems worldwide, always serving with human touch, confirming to the best of professional, ethical and moral standards
 
FACILITIES
 
Department Laboratories
Four well established laboratories, to meet the computing needs of the students.
  • C-programming and Object Oriented Programming Laboratory
  • Unix and System Software Laboratory
  • C# and .Net Laboratory
  • Web and Internet Computing Laboratory.

Each laboratory has a spacious carpet area of 66 sqm to accommodate 30 students at a time, respectively. Computers are networked, with latest configurations and provided with LCD and other required teaching aid.

Department Library

An independent Library cum reading room provides students’ access to the latest Titles, journals, Conference Papers, Question Papers and Placement supporting material. In addition, traditional and digital references are available in the Central Library.

Internships
The MCA programme includes a 6 month internship cum project study in different companies to enable students to gain practical experience and make a transition into the industry. Our students have done a number of the outstanding projects well appreciated by their managers and companies.

Placements
Industry interaction with the department enhances students internship, consultancy projects and placements. Students are trained under I-Point, which helps in placements and highly focus on the overall Personality Development of every individual. The Placement Training Activities are also conducted for the students by the departmental staffs to qualify them for placements.

There are numerous opportunities to participate in projects and postgraduate research. There is no shortage of exciting career opportunities available to graduates.

We have a team of well qualified and highly committed faculty members with good professional backgrounds. The faculty will always empower the students by guiding them through their projects, seminars and other academic related activities and also encourage them to take up challenges in academic affairs and train them with appropriate fields

ACTIVITIES

Association “TECNOCRATS”
The department activities promotes the association to encourage students participation at National, State and College level Seminars, Conferences, Workshops, Technical and Cultural competitions. This experience is invaluable in providing students academic and organizational skills they need when the department hosts “Joshiana” and “Lakshya” - both prestigious National Level IT Fests, for postgraduate and undergraduate students, respectively.

Joshiana and Lakshya are highly popular for JAM, IT QUIZ and AD MADS events which is conducted in a unique way, which always attracts the participants.

Tech Prints, a one-day National level Paper Presentation for students of various Universities and Colleges, was initiated on 2nd April 2013. The objective of this programme is to expand academic knowledge and experience of current IT.

Guest lectures are also invited to add extra value to academic components.

“Tantra Koshas” is a departmental newsletter. The magazine would comprise of technical articles pertaining to recent trends and advancements in IT. It would assist the students in exhibiting their technical skills and enhance their knowledge. The magazine is planned to be a quarterly periodical which would be published once in 3 months.

Students not only organize but also given opportunity to participate in various Technical Fest in other esteemed Universities and Colleges. Some of the Highlights are:

Industrial Visits/Tours
An annual event in the fifth semester, official technical tour to different technical companies create opportunities for students to explore the business application of their academic study and interact with professionals at different levels. Some of the places recently visited by our students are:
  • Infosys Bangalore Development Center- an insight to IT company
  • EMC2 Data Center- an unique exposure to professional corporate industry
  • Industrial Technology Park WhiteField- pathway to tech field
  • Visveswaraya Industrial And Technical museum – develop industry knowladge
  • Industrial Visit to BSNL, Pandeshwar – Live demonstration on Land line links
  • SPARK and INSPIRATION programs at Infosys Managlore – Motivated towards “Project Think Approach” which enhanced students to prepare for projects

Outreach Programs
Students have taken an initiative to conduct outreach program at some of the places like:
  • Little Sister's of the poor, Home for aged, Bajjodi Nantoor Mangalore.
  • CARDTS home for HIV+ children, Nantoor Mangalore
  • St Antony's Old age home, Jeppu Managlore
This program promotes students in developing social relationships.
