The Department of Computer Applications
in association with Industry Interaction and Entrepreneurship Development Cell
(IIEDC) organized an interactive session on “Industry Practices on Software
Project Delivery” for the MCA students on Wednesday, 8th August 2018
at 11:00 AM at Bishop Aloysius Paul Conference Hall of the college. The resource
person for this session was Mr Hari S, Lead-Education Training and Assessment
(ETA), Infosys Trivandrum Development Centre.
The session began with the HOD of MCA,
Ms Sumangala N, introducing the resource person and welcoming the gathering.
The interaction was being arranged owing to the gap between industry and
academia as indicated by Mr Hari S.
During the interaction, Mr Hari S
interacted passionately with all the students. As the audience was
predominantly from Computer Science background, he emphasized on the need to be
good programmers. He raised conces over the students recruited by Infosys
during the year 2017-18, who are currently undergoing training at Infosys
Global Education Centre, Mysuru. He pointed out that most of the recruits are
unable to write code for any scenario posed in front of them. This was quite
alarming from the point of view of Infosys as they will have to put extra
efforts to train the fresh recruits.
Mr Hari urged all students to take up
coding more seriously and try to perfect it. He said that there are no
shortcuts to being a good coder and practice is the only way to go forward. He
asked all the students to code beyond what is prescribed in the syllabus. He
said almost all will be able to write code but it is more important to write
good coder. He mentioned a few of the best practices followed in the industry
and named some of the open source tools to check the quality of the code. He
stressed on the fact that due care must be taken to make sure that all coding
standards and conventions are adhered to when writing codes. This makes the
code more readable and ensures better understanding, if and when the code has
to be reused in future. He mentioned that reusing and scaling is the essence of
coding and the coding standards ensure these aspects.
The session came to an end with Mr
Hari S taking on a few of the queries posed by the students.

A
tutorial on Inteet of Things IoT and
Smart Environments by TCS – Bengaluru was organised at SJEC. The tutorial
was part of the ongoing Two Days National Conference on Smart Computing and
Control NCSCC-17. The tutorial was delivered by Dr Bighnaraj Panigrahi,
Scientist at TCS Innovation Labs – Bengaluru. Inteet of Things IoT is a
widely applicable concept revolutionizing human interactions with the world
around. It is a worldwide network of interconnected objects, uniquely
addressable based on standard communication protocols. Dr Panigrahi explained
the basic technology behind IoT and offered insights into IoT’s potential
applications and research avenues that could be pursued at SJEC. Considering
the recent initiative of Mangalore being declared India’s Start-up district by
the GOI, IoT offers great opportunity for the young graduates at SJEC and Mangalore
in general to develop innovations that will help Mangalore truly become a Smart
City.
Dr
Panigrahi began by describing the Inteet of Things IoT as the next in line
following the revolutionary invention of the Inteet and Cellular networks. He
mentioned that; heterogeneity, interoperability, intercommunication, and
automation as the areas of influence of IoT. He provided the data of 1% of
‘things’ in the world are connected currently and from 10 billion things of
today, around 50 billion things will be connected by 2020. Companies across the
globe have invested 14 Trillion Dollars over the past 10 years on IoT, and this
signifies the interest in IoT and its integration on human life in the future.
From, Industrial Automation, Health Care, and Smart Homes, to Agriculture,
Defence, and Smart Cities, IoT find applications everywhere. Research on IoT
related technologies, such as, IoT devices, Network Architecture and Protocols,
Fog Computing, Inteet of Everything, and Security & Privacy, are
currently being pursued worldwide. Dr Panigrahi also explained about the
ongoing IoT related activities at TCS – Bengaluru and concluded with a video of
a Smart Home demonstrating all the applications of IoT that were explained.
